Types of Medical Device Packaging

Medical device packaging plays a vital role in ensuring product integrity, sterility, and safety from the factory floor to the point of use. Choosing the right packaging type depends on the device’s size, sterility requirements, and how it will be used or handled. Here’s a breakdown of the most common types of medical device packaging.

Medical Device Packaging, Broken Down

1. Pouches and Bags
Ideal for lightweight, sterile products like catheters, syringes, or wound care items, medical-grade pouches and bags often use Tyvek® or polyethylene materials. And they’re easy to seal, allow for gas or steam sterilization, and provide clear visibility.

2. Blister Packs
These are commonly used for single-use or disposable items. A clear plastic cavity holds the device in place and is sealed with a foil or film backing. Also, blister packs are great for tamper evidence and consumer confidence, especially for retail or point-of-care items.

3. Thermoformed Trays
Rigid trays, often made from PETG or HDPE, offer excellent protection for fragile or complex devices such as implants or surgical tools. Additionally, they can include custom compartments and are typically used in combination with lids or peelable seals.

4. Clamshells
These hinged plastic containers fully encase a product and snap shut, offering strong protection and visibility. And they’re especially useful for kits or devices that require clear identification without opening the package.

5. Sterile Barrier Systems (SBS)
For surgical instruments or high-risk devices, SBS packaging is essential. Basically, it combines multiple layers—such as inner pouches and outer cartons—to maintain sterility through transport and storage.
