Luxury Foil Stamping: Case Study

Among the many uses and purposes for unique packaging, gifting is one of the most fun for which we like to design.  Organizations come to Sunrise Packaging to help design custom gift boxes for their customers and employees to hold a variety of things. Anniversary gifts, holiday mementos, and more are all common requests. The possibilities are pretty endless when it comes to packaging customization. But one of the most universally popular is luxury foil stamping for setup boxes.

Inherent Message in Luxury Foil Stamping

Luxury foil stamping is a tactic employed by A/Z Corp for the gift boxes we recently created for them. We started with our custom two piece setup box, a style utilized frequently by tech orgs for cell phones, tablets, and items of high value. Using a style associated with expensive items creates a valuable connection in the mind of the recipient. From the snug fit to the non-telescoping lid, it's a luxurious experience to just open the package.

The box is wrapped in black ultima, upon which the luxury foil stamping is inlaid. In addition to looking clean and classic, it feels clean and classic in the hands of the user.  A/Z Corp falls into the category of "another happy customer" with this stylish addition to our packaging library!

Luxury at Every Price Point

Contact Sunrise to learn more about the other ways we incorporate luxury finishing into projects. We understand how different budgets might make you think that it isn't possible to have the level of luxury you want in a finished product. But there are limitless ways in which we can integrate different high-end elements. Every project is unique, and we're confident in our ability to design the perfect box for your needs.

Creating a TikTok-Worthy College Acceptance Package

One of the most exciting and validating experiences in life is getting the college acceptance of your dreams. It's an event that has almost mythic importance in American culture with movies, books, and user-generated content focused on the event. And it's something that many colleges and universities know can make or break their freshman class. As social media has become more and more omnipresent, particularly visual mediums like Instagram and TikTok, prospective students are documenting just about ever aspect of their lives. Including college acceptance packages. Which is what makes designing a college acceptance package doubly important for enrollment.

The Whole College Acceptance Package

A college acceptance package can have a few purposes. Of course, information sharing is, ostensibly, the most important aspect of it. Conveying the deadline for registration, orientation information, and more is important for prospective students. But it can wait for the follow up mailing.

In the acceptance, find ways to ramp up the excitement. Maybe it's with some branded swag or a custom video from a university personality that will resonate with the prospect. Take into consideration the type of degree as well; college freshman will be excited by different things than an MBA or doctoral student. These flash pads, created for Baylor College of Medicine, contain USB drives, business cards and booklets. Knowing your audience is step one to knowing how to create the type of content that will influence and entice.

College Preparedness on Social Media

Accepting an admittance letter is a big deal. Students have plenty of choices; it's not easy for marketing and admissions offices to stand out from the noise. But it is possible. Sunrise Packaging can help with the logistics once you know the content of the package or box.

Making the Case: Front Open Boxes

Designing front open boxes takes an eye for more than just aesthetics. While the overall effect is exciting from a visual perspective, it's the usability of this type of box opening that provides extra value.

99 Designs has a few idea for what makes for exciting packaging. They classify the unique approaches into single words like luxe, bold, charming, nostalgic, casual, and crisp. While these apply easily to the content, color scheme, and specific elements, they don't particularly convey the sense that they package is well-appointed to its intent. And with the front open box, it's front and center.

Form and Functionality with Front Open Boxes

A front open box is a style of packaging that doesn't work for every industry or need. In our years of experience, we've seen this style of box lend itself particularly well to these specific industries or uses:

  • Educational: the front open box is perfect for organization while needing frequent access. It's simple to flip the lid, grab what you need and move on.
  • Retail: front open boxes are enticing on the store shelf as they quite literally invite the user to check it out.
  • Training: much like education, training or employee onboarding also has a system to how the user should access information. The front open box can convey that system in a method that's different from the more common folder or binder structure.

Ultimately, the package should convey the message intended for it's audience. But it should also convey that message in a way that makes sense and follows any important order.

Form Follows Function

One of the most important tenets of package design is that the form should follow function. Basically, that the design should be informed by how the product is intended to be used. And that is clearly the case when it comes to front open boxes. At Sunrise, we have decades of experience to help you determine what the right form for your function might be.

Marketing Kit Design

Marketing kit design is one of our favorite things at Sunrise Packaging.  While they go by different names depending on the industry and organizational history, if you're looking for information on an advertising kit, media kit, etc, the same principles can apply.

Generally speaking, these types of presentation packaging are geared toward information sharing. Whether it's about sharing your brand, your business, or otherwise, it's the best way for any company to control the narrative.

Universal Principles of Marketing Kit Design

Information sharing utilizes a few basics that should be standard in any marketing kit. Here are some suggestions to help determine your content from Xtensio.  And while you focus on that piece, we'll take control of the package design.

  • Overview and summary. Make sure that you provide a cursory overview of your company in plain language that a news or media outlet can replicate in their format. Check this often to ensure that the contacts are current!
  • Press releases with milestones and accomplishments. Let your track record speak for itself. Include information on accolades received alongside major mentions of your company's growth.
  • Consider visualizations. Graphs showing market share, charts of organizational reach, any way that you can cut down on words and show your meaning can amp up your marketing kit.

Creating an Iterative Media Kit

Don't forget to keep your marketing kit and related materials updated with new contact information as well as with any new awards or mentions. These are materials that should be designed as interchangeable over time, as they probably change frequently and should be as current as possible. But the container for these materials is what should be designed as malleable as possible - and that's where we come in.

At Sunrise, we have decades of experience in creating marketing kits. From three ring binder style to front open boxes to portfolios and beyond, we can help you decide how to create a packaging design that will stand the test of time. And the test of new information.

Medical Device Launch Kits

A medical device launch is a huge undertaking for a lot of reasons. Normal products (or those in non-regulated industries) are also not a small project, but they are usually subject to their own timelines and without the risk that comes with medical devices. A medical device is subject to Food and Drug Administration (FDA) review. It's potentially a big impact on budget, staff and project timelines, in addition to the general uncertainty that accompanies any launch process.

It's a lot. But not impossible. Sunrise has extensive experience with these types of device launches that can make the process a bit easier and a bit more transparent.

Device Launch Packaging

Transparency and the FDA might sound like a joke. But with a little pre-planning, it can help make the device launch process a lot easier. Launch Team Inc. provides these four steps to help manage this process:

  1. Design a product launch timeline that incorporates price point and application novelty consideration
  2. Create the device launch plan with contingencies for anything unexpected (and accompanying communication schedule to make sure everyone involved has clear expectations and insight into the status)
  3. Create and follow a documentation plan which allows managers to control documentation costs while delegating work/resources appropriately, track progress of product development and customer-centered deliverables (like packaging)
  4. Design the customer plan - what training documents and programs need to be in place for sales, customer service, and more to help customers understand, purchase, troubleshoot and maintain the device

Successful Launches Require Planning

A successful medical device launch takes a lot of planning and thorough communication strategy. But is possible to unload part of the process by partnering with organizations who understand the process.

Sunrise has worked on packaging for many medical device launches, creating kits that speak to different customers and regions. Contact our sales team when you're ready to benefit from our experience in the medical packaging industry.

Designing Your Brand Box

As others have noted, there really isn't a "return to normal" post-COVID 19. We're looking at a new normal, and the ripple effects will be felt in every industry. And we will make the case that it will even expand into the area of brand box creation.

Branded packaging might be an afterthought for some organizations. But that should change, regardless of whether your business is operating solely by mail or your products can be found in brick-and-mortar locations. A well-branded box used to be a way to stand out on a shelf, or in some kind of physical space. In this new normal, it might be the only way you have to entice and connect with customers.

The Brand Box & Branded Packaging Matters

Looka discusses the importance of a well-designed brand box, but particularly its value in connecting with a customer. Respondents to a survey on branded packaging are 40% more likely to recommend a product if it comes in cool packaging. But even beyond e-commerce, there are incentives for organizations to invest in personalized packaging.

Some of the trends that emerged from coronavirus are expected to continue. Things like curbside pickup, online ordering, and more haven't seen much a decline as vaccination rates increase. The convenience and desire to avoid potential infection persists. A brand box is a great touchpoint between customers and organizations, and with this kind of shopping becoming the norm, it might be the only touchpoint an organization has going forward.

Touchpoints into Trillions

E-commerce sales are in the trillions. Nabbing a part of those sales should be part of any product strategy. And believe us, packaging design should also be part of that strategy.

FlashPad Wallet: Pocket Marketing

Inspiration can come from random places. In the immortal words of Missy Elliott, sometimes you gotta put your thing down, flip it and reverse it. We didn't go quite to those lengths for our FlashPad Wallet, but this emblem of the pocket marketing movement has other elements of innovation.

Every Friday, we highlight a FlashPad project from the past on our social channels. Our FlashPad Wallets recently popped up, and we felt they deserve a bit more of the spotlight. These small-but-mighty packages can hold all the value of their big brother FlashPads. But with a leaner look and more condensed copy, they feel a little lighter.

Pocket Marketing Goes the Distance

Per the name, we envision pocket marketing as something that's as seamless as putting in your pocket. Literally and figuratively.

Our FlashPad Wallet is the inspiration for this concept. Aptly named, it fits in a pocket like a wallet in addition to functioning like one. The hard, sturdy case feels almost book-like, and the custom-formed internal cavity can hold a variety of items. In the past, we've used the FlashPad Wallet to hold gift cards, keys and key fobs, collector coins, challenge coins, coin markers, poker chips, and more.  As you can probably guess, this kind of packaging is versatile enough to work for just about any industry and for any purpose, from university new student orientations to celebrating a 20 year work anniversary.

Put It In Your Pocket

What's in your pocket?

Or more importantly, what's in your customer's pocket?

Take the extra step to ensure that it's your custom FlashPad Wallet. Sunrise takes pride in being a great collaborator with years of experience to inform design decisions and recommendations. Contact us today for your personalized packaging project!

Upscale Marketing Promotions

USB sticks might not be used as much as they once were, but that doesn't mean that we can't repurpose some of their inspirations. When we think about upscale marketing promotions, this is actually our top inspo for compact and effective packaging. Meet the Flashpad

The FlashPad is one of our flagship containers. As we said above, we initially designed it to hold custom USB drives, but the appeal goes far beyond just memory sticks. Car dealerships, mortgage companies, universities, and more have all utilized our FlashPad for different promotions. Here are just a few of the great and innovative approaches clients take.

Marketing Promotions That Go Beyond the FlashDrive

The FlashPad is a versatile packaging style that can speak volumes about your organization with just a little context.

  • Gift item. Initially, the FlashPad was a piece of conference swag. While conferences might feel like a thing of the past in these COVID-times, mortgage companies and realtors are repurposing that gift scenario by using FlashPads to hold gift cards or other small tokens of appreciation for clients.
  • Key fobs. Car dealerships and salesmen love that final wave goodbye off the lot. Our FlashPads give them a little more oomph by commemorating the new car experience by housing the extra keyfob of a new vehicle... Alongside the helpful sales person's business card.
  • Digital books, music, photos and more. Upscale marketing never sleeps. And that's especially true for artists of all types. Whether your medium is music, words, or photos, the FlashPad provides a safe home for your work and also provides an opportunity to give your users a little more.

These examples barely touch on the different ways that the FlashPad has met the needs of many businesses and products. Take a minute and reflect on your marketing needs. We guarantee that this might be the answer for more than one thing. If you are ready to talk and learn more about Sunrise Packaging, give us a call!

Premium Brand Refresh or Rebrand?

Let's talk about brands. And specifically, a brand refresh.

Before we dig in too deep, let's clarify the difference between a refresh and a redesign. As Creative.Co writes:

A brand refresh is a makeover for your company... Think of it like a personal makeover ... a better haircut, up-to-date outfit, and new shoes that transform how a person is perceived. It's the same with your brand.

Rebranding can be a complete redesign... A transformation, a new identity and brand system for the same name. And with the new logo design—fresh messaging, a reinvented visual system and a transformed marketing program to catapult the organization forward.

While rebranding might in the cards for your company, it's not something that can be implemented overnight. Many organizations opt for the refresh - and refresh, and refresh - ultimately landing a little further away each time.

A brand refresh seems straighforward enough. Update the stylesheet for the website, update the brand logos wherever they appear, etc. But for things that are a little less dynamic or harder to change--like boxes or custom packaging--the refresh isn't quite a straightforward.

Applying a Brand Refresh to Packaging Options

If it's not in the budget to completely toss the old packaging and buy new that corresponds with the refresh, there are options available. Much of it depends on the type of packaging in which you have invested.

For example, stickers or new wraps are quick, easy ways to hide an old brand. You can also work with our team to look into new finishing options that can help disguise the old brand in different ways. We've worked with companies that leaned in completely to their brand refresh by designing a customer-focused experience that included new packaging encompassing the old packaging.

Ultimately, it's up to your company and your budget with how far-reaching you want to take the packaging refresh.

Update Your Brand, Update Your Packaging

A brand refresh needs to extend across your entire portfolio to be effective. It can cause confusion and dissonance to see different logos, colors and other attributes for the same company. We know it's a big decision for any company to make. But when it's time to update, Sunrise Packaging can help you make the transition as seamless as possible!
