When people talk about construction, they’re usually not talking about box construction. They might talk about cranes. Skyscrapers. Majestic, sweeping bridges, or unmistakeable jackhammers. In light of these admittedly bigger projects (at least physically), we’d like to present something smaller, and more immediate. Box construction isn’t something that we take lightly. And it deserves more consideration.

Constructing memorable packaging takes more work than simply folding cardboard. There’s the material to consider, and the finishing touches. What will the product be, and how can we mirror or forecast it with the box styling? How can we bring it all together?
As a study in style, let’s look at the setup box.
You’ve almost definitely held a setup box in your hand. It’s ubiquitous in the technology world, especially for smartphones. You probably remember opening up the box for the last smartphone you purchased. The box was probably small, tailored to the brand (white for Apple, black for Samsung, and so on). As you pulled the top off, it probably resisted a little before begrudgingly sliding off slowly. Your new phone–an expensive but exciting purchase–lay cradled inside.
Did we get it right?
Setup boxes are evocative and classic. They’re constructed in a way that makes them firm and rigid, yet–as you experienced–yielding and personal to the user.
All packaging must (or at least should) be branded. And with a brand, comes personality.
As we stated above, the chic blankness of an Apple product is practically iconic at this point. So are the set up boxes they use to house their phones and tablets, with no spared expense to create the perfect stage for their products. When someone opens your product packaging, what personality are they witnessing?
