How to Work the Magnetic Flap Box

Magnetic flaps on their own are used widely not only in packaging. Binders often use a magnetic flap for closure, as do some styles of journals and books (Bibles are probably the most common). Even some purses use magnetic flaps to ensure tight closure. The magnetic flap box is also increasingly popular, and that's in part to the versatility--and universal delight--of magnets.

It starts with the traditional hinged cigar box. The overlapping hard cover, with magnet, is the additional feature that elevates a simple box into something a little more. While the magnet is the *connecting* piece, so to speak, other elements can take your simple box to the next level.

The Magnetic Flap Box in Action

In the example to the side, created for CME4Life, you can see some of our favorite options at work.

First and foremost: the magnetic flap. It allows for a seamless design from top to bottom, creating a continuity for the eye to follow. It continues as the user slides their finger under the flap to open, revealing the product in full.

This digitally-printed box also features vivid colors. Sunrise can ensure color-matching with this process so that your logo and brand recognition are never compromised in the printing process. It's also laminated. Lamination can enhance colors as well as create another tactile touchpoint for users. This particular example uses matte lamination, one of our favorites. It makes the box as a whole soft to the touch, smooth, and adds a layer of protection to the piece.

Other Magnetic Flap Box Options

This magnetic flap box is just one example of many that Sunrise has handcrafted over the years. Other features which we think make this style of packaging especially pop include:

  • Custom inserts
In short, inserts keep packaging neat and products safe. Made to order for every project, we can ensure that our custom inserts will fit to perfection.
  • Thermoformed trays
Sunrise has a custom tooling department that means no delay or travel between workshops for your packaging creation. Thermoforming is a great option to highlight product features; it's literally like a little stage for your items!
  • Personalized foil stamping
One of the most popular options out there. Foil stamping is a striking customization option that immediately creates a sense of luxury for any package.

And this is just scratching the surface of what's possible with packaging customization. Contact Sunrise today to design your project!

Opening Day = Box Closures

As a proud Minnesota company, we love all things related to our hometown teams. And on this Opening Day for the Minnesota Twins, we turned our attention to another kind of opening that captures our attention: box closures.

If you want to contest the importance of and customer attention to box closures, look no further than your own experience. We don’t doubt that at one point or another, you spent more time than you like to admit lazily flipping open a magnetic box lid. Or slowly slide the top piece off of a setup box to savor the moment of getting a new smartphone or tablet. The delicious moment of flipping up a cigar box top.

Design custom packaging that allows users to savor that anticipation. Here are some of our favorite box closures in honor of Opening Day!

Box Closures That Captivate

Magnetic Closures

Far and away one of our most popular features. Magnetic boxes are versatile and instant keepsakes for users. Closures can be embedded in many different types of box styles. Plus magnets are one of the most secure types of closure so products are safe and secure.

custom luxury boxesSetup Boxes

You might not think a lot about setup boxes having a particular flavor to their opening and closing, but consider again.  Setup boxes are a frequently used for luxury goods and technology products for a few reasons. Their rigid chipboard construction, paired with a thermoformed or custom insert, keeps the product secure. These highly-customizable two pieces allow for a high quality finish via the wrap. Most of all, the sleek design is evocative and suggestive of luxury.

Unconventional Set Up Boxes

Using the term "set up boxes" might make sense to you or it might not. If you're not attuned to the packaging industry, it probably doesn't mean much. But that's where we like to take the chance to educate you.

A setup box consists of two pieces. In layman's terms, a top and bottom. The bottom is usually made of strong chipboard with a custom wrap on it. Otherwise known as turned edge, this stylish finish can take on different elements depending on your needs. The top fits snugly over the bottom. Also made of chipboard, it slides on and off easily; you've no doubt encountered this style as it's often used for game boxes, smartphones, and more.

As you look through our two piece set-up box gallery, you will see the unlimited potential of this customized box style. Sunrise just completed an interesting variation for Findlay Technologies.

Set Up Boxes By Design

Confused? Look closer.

By design, this might appear to be another cardboard package delivered by any mail service. Once you read the address label, it becomes clear that this isn't just another mailing box. While pictures don't quite do it justice, the feel of the box gives it away as something special as well.

You can't quite tell, but these are set-up boxes. The boxes are wrapped with a digitally printed / matte lamination material. From the corners, you can just the turned edge finishing on them.

We love the unconventionality of this box. It takes multiple sets of expectations and flips them, creating a sense of surprise and fun the for the recipient. Here's what we mean.

Expectation #1: It's just a plain cardboard box

But from that first touch, the customer realizes that it isn't. Part of engaging users is finding ways to engage their senses, and with this design and style, they're all in.  And once they open the box, they're treated to even more potential customization. Thermoformed trays, custom inserts, the sky's the limit.

Expectation #2: It's just another set up box

Using a design that usurps expectations helps engage users, but it also illustrates different features of a particular packaging style. While these setup boxes share characteristics with others, the content and design are what set it apart.  Set up boxes lend themselves well to a variety of finishing options. And their hardcover durability makes them trustworthy packaging for nearly any product.

Design Maketh the Set-Up Box

So the lesson that we learn from this? Taking the time to figure out the overall effect you want your packaging to have helps determine the right box style and the right design.  Taking something seemingly conventional, like setup boxes, and turning them into something truly unconventional, is a challenge we love taking up. Thermoforming Packaging Outlook

When it comes to custom packaging, thermoforming is about as literal as you can get.

Design and personalization appear in all of our projects. But when it comes to truly crafting packaging around a product, thermoforming provides the best amount of customization. This style of personalized packaging takes a sheet of plastic that is heated until pliable, and then molded to the desired shape. You've experienced a variety of thermoformed packaging, and maybe not even realized it. For example, any time you have opened medicine in a plastic container with a foil back... That's blister packaging. If you've slid a plastic tray out of a box... That's a thermoformed tray.

The incredible array of possibilities for thermoforming is part of what makes it such a dynamic industry. Digital Journal projects that the market for thermoformed trays, blister packs, and more will see steady growth through at least 2026. Plastic trays and custom plastic packaging have become an important aspect of packaging. As more and more people turn to shopping online, the need for packaging stability and protection increase. Not to mention the ability to capture freshness and keep products firmly sealed.

How Industries are Personalizing Thermoforming

When it comes to specific industries, thermoforming allows them to not only package with integrity, but also with precision and intentionality.

Take a look at the image to the side. These cosmetics are packed in safely and securely, but also with an element of presentation. All users who purchase this product will be able to have a consistent experience, from any part of the country.  Not to mention that these containers, otherwise fragile and full of precious substance, are protected from the potential pitfalls of transit and retail shoppers.

Healthcare packaging is another industry which often uses thermoforming. We discussed pill packaging above, but this style of single-servings also helps with compliance packaging. Compliance packaging ensures that users are taking the correct dosage/amount at the right time. Adding features to the packaging design, like a clock or other graphics, along with the individual blisters, assists users in being responsible and understanding how their medication works.

Thermoforming Market Growth

These two industries are hardly the only ones out there using thermoformed trays, blister packs, etc. The food industry, horticulture, electronics/technology, and more have adopted thermoformed products as part of their packaging lineup. Learn more about the options we can provide to you to keep products safe and sound through our thermoforming options!

Compliance Packaging Spikes Innovation In Medical Packaging

Compliance packaging is a friendly way to help consumers take their medication on schedule. And blister packaging provides the perfect platform for it.

Let’s establish why compliance packaging is such an important issue today. If you’ve ever been charged with taking a medication daily, there have surely been days when you forgot about it. Whether that lead to unintentionally skipping a day or just a few hours, it has an effect. Or maybe you’ve been prescribed a device that you’ve been using incorrectly. Inhalers are notorious for misuse. With over half of the US population on some kind of medication for a chronic condition, nonadherence is a big issue. So much so that a 2008 Medco survey estimates that half of those people don’t adhere to the given guidelines for their medication. A year later, the Network for Excellence in Health Innovation cited this as responsible for up to $290 billion in unnecessary costs every year.

How Thermoformed Blister Packs Aid Compliance Packagingcompliance packaging with blister packs

As mentioned above, compliance packaging makes it easy for users to to take the right dosage at the right time. Here are some examples from the 2016 HCPC Compliance Package of the Year winner of how they used blister packaging in their design.

The winner created packaging for a two week dosing regimen. The blisters are designed like a calendar, with each box making up two two-week packs. With red arrows leading the user from pack to pack, it’s clear how they should progress and take the dosage. The thermoformed blister packs ensure that the user doesn’t take more or less than is prescribed.

In addition to keeping the dosage consistent and accurate, blister packs play another role. With the aging baby boomer market, packaging accessibility becomes a consideration.  Being able to open pill bottles requires dexterity and hand strength… Something we tend to lose as we age. Blister packs allow for users of varying strength and dexterity access with ease.

Implications in Other Industries

While the term is usually applied to the pharmaceutical or medical packaging industries, compliance packaging measures can apply everywhere.  Making retail packaging that’s easy to use, regardless of hand strength, is a standard to which all packaging should be held. Designing labels and lids for thermoformed packaging that inform and educate users is a great use of space.

What measures has your organization taken to create a compliance packaging approach?

Recycling Thermoformed Packaging

For good reason, retailers and companies are increasingly concerned with the re-usability of packaging. Using materials that can be recycled and reused is not only good for the environment, but a selling point to eco-conscious customers. Recycling thermoformed packaging is one reason Sunrise Packaging loves promoting our thermoforming processes, but not the only one.

We turned to the current industry analysis and trends on industrial thermoform packaging material market to find out why this style of customized inserts and packaging is rapidly increasing in popularity.

Reasons to Love Recycling Thermoformed Packaging

It’s good for the globe.

Recycling plastic leads to a robust second life for a variety of products (see what kinds of plastics can be recycled). With the majority of thermoformed materials meeting the requirements for recycling initiatives, it allows consumers to buy with confidence. On a grander scale, it reduces greenhouse gasses and pollution, as well as the waste filling up dumps and natural environments.

It’s good for the consumer.

And in more ways than you might think. It takes less energy to make products from recycled plastic than it does using virgin materials. It saves on oil, which in turn makes more oil available for heating homes and other uses. That’s just one example of how recycling thermoformed packaging helps the collective and not just individuals.

It’s good for your organization.

Thermoforming has a lot of advantages. It’s ligthweight but solid. It’s environmentally-friendly while providing stiff storage for products. Additionally, more and more products require the versatility offered by custom plastic packaging. Wood and glass can’t promise a moisture-free, odor-free environment that also blocks light. Oh, and while keeping weight and shipping costs down.

Upcycling For The Greater Good

Upcycling‘ is becoming an increasingly popular term to further clarify recycling. It means taking a product and reusing it for a new purpose. But in such a way that creates a product of higher quality or value. It’s not exactly a new idea–there must have been some inventive upcycling going on through the Great Depression, right?–but it’s gained traction in our eco-friendly society.

Choosing packaging that can be re-purposed is more than just a fiscal decision. As people become more educated about making choices, trends show that the demand for recyclable packaging will grow. Get ahead of the game by working with Sunrise Packaging to create recyclable thermoformed packaging!

Thermoformed Custom Trays Add Protection

Thermoforming is a process that allows plastic to be molded to fit whatever it needs to contain. Custom trays are an especially popular application for the process. They offer many benefits–

  • Organization
In presentation packaging, it’s important for every thing to have it’s place..and for it not to shift in transit. It’s like a fisherman’s tackle box. If the lures and bait are all mixed it up, it causes chaos Thermoformed custom trays for the health and beauty products.and confusion. Custom trays are the perfect way to contain products, samples, etc. in specific spots for consistency and expediency.
  • Versatility
No matter what type of product or insert you want to include in your packaging, there’s a custom tray that will work. Trays can be used to keep marketing collateral in place in nearly any kind of packaging. Custom pads, magnetic cigar boxes, binders, the list is endless when it comes to what Sunrise Packaging can heat-seal.

–But chief among these benefits is the protection provided by custom thermoformed trays.

Custom Trays Protect Materials

From CDs to pamphlets to flash drives, it’s important that your materials arrive in pristine condition.  The durable nature of custom trays ensures that whatever they encase will arrive without a dent or mark. They also defend against other potential contaminants, like liquid or water.

Protection against…

  • Physical harm.  It’s a wild world out there. Water and other liquids could ruin labels and packaging; your products could be jostled and chipped at any stage. Custom trays help lower the risk of these defects.
  • Product fragility. Glass containers are beautiful and go a long way to convey luxury to customers. But it’s fragile. The same goes for some types of plastic containers, and a variety of products that can be easily crushed or their integrity otherwise compromised.  Custom trays add a literal layer to safeguard against this kind of damage.
  • Damage expenses. It’s true that there will always be some damage in transit, but it doesn’t have to happen frequently.  It’s also necessary to plan for rough handling in package sorting. Thermoformed trays can help reduce the possibility of breakage. As well as the expenses incurred from damaged products.

Custom Thermoforming Packaging Options

When it comes to thermoforming packaging, there’s more than meets the eye.

It’s the ultimate in custom packaging, as the pliable plastic is molded specifically for products. This perfect fit is part of what is driving the market for this specific type of packaging. In fact, PRNewswire estimates that the thermoformed plastics market will hit over $16 billion dollars by 2015. Demand will increase from industries as diverse as healthcare to automotive to construction, driven by this style’s unique properties. So what’s so special about this style of packaging?

Thermoforming Packaging Options

There are a few styles when it comes to thermoformed packaging.  Each one has different applications and advantages, and work differently for different products. Here’s a quick rundown:

Custom Thermoformed Trays

Highly versatile as well as usable, thermoformed trays are precision-formed to provide the highest level of protection for products. They can even be created with a locking mechanism to ensure that nothing shifts or breaks in transit. These custom trays can be inserted and heat-sealed into boxes or binders to hold not only your products, but companion content as well. USB drives, discs, manuals, you name it. It’s important that your customers experience your products in an ideal setting, right? Custom thermoformed trays create that ideal setting, anywhere and everywhere.

Thermoformed Blister Packaging

Originally used for packaging aspirin, blister packaging is a lightweight, easy-to-open option for custom thermoformed packaging. Blister packaging is comprised of clear plastic housing your product and adhered to a backing like cardboard or foil. While the idea of easy-to-open packaging might not be at the top of your list of considerations, it’s proving to be a main motivator for some shoppers. Driven by the aging baby boomer market, usability is an increasingly large concern, especially for healthcare and medical devices.

Custom Thermoformed Clamshells

Clamshells are an increasingly popular option for items that customers want to see before buying. For obvious reasons, it’s not always in the best interests of retailers and producers to have customers opening their products, fidgeting with them, and then walking away. By encasing products in clear plastic, customers can see the exact product they’re looking to purchase. And by making the packaging securely tamper-proof, they know that it’s in perfect condition. We recommend adding a printed insert as well for your branding and more marketing real estate!

Thermoformed Trays Add A Little Something Extra

When it comes to packaging, there’s a lot of emphasis on the outside. Think of a birthday present. If two presents are placed in front of you–one with a sleek, crisp package, the other in a paper bag–which do you want to open first? While the outside of the packaging might be what attracts customers in the first place, it’s what’s inside that retains them. This is where thermoformed trays take center stage…or rather, they provide the center stage. Thermoformed trays for the health and beauty products.

Thermoformed trays are essentially plastic trays, heated and molded into custom shapes and sizes to ensure that your products are held firmly in place. They create a veritable stage for your products. Trays can be placed inside nearly any kind of container, from the popular cigar box to a turned-edge binder.  It’s a versatile solution that many industries include in their packaging designs.

Here are a few more reasons why this type of custom insert works well for so many different needs:

Thermoformed Trays Offer Products:

Protection

To go back to the birthday present example, the only thing more disappointing than a poorly-wrapped present is a broken one. Thermoformed trays are customized to your product, ensuring that it is secure within the larger package.

Safety

Healthcare packaging and medical device packaging typically utilize thermorformed trays for safety reasons. This industry, focused on life-saving tools and equipment, needs to have their tools safely stored in place where it’s easy to find and use them.

Organization

Whatever you happen to be packaging with your product, thermoformed trays can keep everything in order. Trays allow you to help customers move through products sequentially.Oor if there are other inserts, to ensure that the most important or relevant ones are easily accessible.

DnD Custom Game Box

If you’re watching Netflix’s Stranger Things, take note: no spoilers appear below, but there is minor discussion on plot points.  The introduction to the main characters features a scene that would convey very different things just a few years ago. They’re sitting around, playing Dungeons & Dragons (or DnD).  Since the show takes place in 1983, it’s clear that they’re being depicted as classic 80’s *nerds,* so to speak. And to drive the message home, they’re also part of the AV Club, get picked on by bullies, and are general outsiders. However, with the relatively recent rise of “geek chic,” these kids are endearing through our 2016 lenses. Also, DnD is experiencing a resurgence of popularity due to all this attention. Since Sunrise Packaging is in the business of boxes, it seems appropriate to turn our attention to making a custom game box for the new wave of DnD-ers.

DnD Needs Assessment

Although online versions exist, this is a game best played in person with a group. It’s a group effort. As the OG of fantasy role playing tabletop games, the custom game box needs to be as iconic as its contents. Color schemes typically fall on the darker end of the spectrum, highlighted with fiery reds, oranges and yellows.

The party of adventurers might always meet at one person’s home, or the set might travel around. This means the box needs to be both durable and easy-to-move. Light, built in handles of some sort, but rigid and strong enough to withstand  transportation. DnD game boards usually fold up, but a custom game board might need more room to lay flat. Some kind of rigid insert might be necessary. Partially for presentation, but also to keep the pieces and dice intact. It’s kind of like using a peg board for tool organization. When they’re outlined, you know exactly which one is missing. Same goes for a custom box insert.

DnD Custom Game Box

So what have we arrived at when it comes to a custom game box, specifically for DnD?

For starters, a custom two-piece setup box is the classic game box style.* The turned edge style is also ideal for the design and strength components. Turned edge boxes are made of chipboard, which is extremely durable. It also lends itself well to a variety of wraps which can best display dynamic DnD graphics and colors. Further custom options can include foil stamped linen or embossed fibers for a slightly Medieval-like feel.

To keep the innards and gaming items in place, the set up box is perfect for multiple types of inserts. Think custom die cut foam, thermoformed tray, insider liners…the options vary as much as DnD gameplay. Add in some sort of handle and you’ve got a party in a box. Literally.
