High End Packaging for Real Estate

Short supply and high demand is a recipe for a crazy housing market. Particularly as more and millennials start to dip their toes into home ownership. It can be daunting for mortgage brokers, homebuilders, and realtors to find ways to make an impact on this tech-savvy, immediate-results generation of homebuyers. Utilizing tools, like social channels featuring high end packaging, is one way to reach people.

In this Uber & DIY-focused economy, brand loyalty and expertise counts for less than it did in the past. For a business like realty, which are hugely relationship-based, this means that their basic marketing model needs to change. Referrals are still a big way to gain business, but reaching out on various mediums is another way to gain interest. It's the online shopping effect. We see something we like, we tap on it and can buy it.

Obviously, real estate doesn't work *quite* like that. But check out Carrington Creek's Insta, and tell me you're not enticed to learn more about these gorgeous homes. Particularly that signature Welcome Home box.

High End Packaging for High End Homes

Carrington Creek (located in Arkansas) is a homebuilder focused on building relationships as well. They've won multiple awards for quality, customer satisfaction, realtor excellence, and more. And when we began work on a special project for them, we knew it was going to be a special collaboration.

High end packaging always presents interesting challenges. At its heart, the best packaging utilizes simple design techniques. But the unique features are where we like to make it truly high end, the little touches that speak to a users tactile or visual senses. For this project, we used offset printing and a scuff free matte lamination.  This box is as sturdy as the homes they build, and just as classic with monochrome coloring. With spot UV over the logo, this is a box that pops. Maybe not as much as that champagne, but it's a coordinated effort!

Use Custom Packaging as Part of a Targeted Marketing Strategy

These welcome boxes are gorgeous on every level. They're highly Instagrammable, prominently featuring the logo, and create a true connection with the homebuyer. It's clear that this is a celebratory gift while still being functional.

But it's still part of a marketing strategy. If you're homebuilding organization or realty company is looking to put that extra panache into your marketing tactics, reach out to Sunrise to sketch out your own welcome kit!

Opening Day = Box Closures

As a proud Minnesota company, we love all things related to our hometown teams. And on this Opening Day for the Minnesota Twins, we turned our attention to another kind of opening that captures our attention: box closures.

If you want to contest the importance of and customer attention to box closures, look no further than your own experience. We don’t doubt that at one point or another, you spent more time than you like to admit lazily flipping open a magnetic box lid. Or slowly slide the top piece off of a setup box to savor the moment of getting a new smartphone or tablet. The delicious moment of flipping up a cigar box top.

Design custom packaging that allows users to savor that anticipation. Here are some of our favorite box closures in honor of Opening Day!

Box Closures That Captivate

Slip Slant Boxes with box closures

Magnetic Closures

Far and away one of our most popular features. Magnetic boxes are versatile and instant keepsakes for users. Closures can be embedded in many different types of box styles. Plus magnets are one of the most secure types of closure so products are safe and secure.

custom luxury boxesSetup Boxes

You might not think a lot about setup boxes having a particular flavor to their opening and closing, but consider again.  Setup boxes are a frequently used for luxury goods and technology products for a few reasons. Their rigid chipboard construction, paired with a thermoformed or custom insert, keeps the product secure. These highly-customizable two pieces allow for a high quality finish via the wrap. Most of all, the sleek design is evocative and suggestive of luxury.

Casino Gift Packaging Ideas for Millennials

As any professional can tell you, a large part of marketing is generational. Strategies that work for baby boomers don't resonate with Gen X. And then millenials have completely different ideas from Gen X, and Gen Z is already rocking the boat before graduating. And for businesses like casinos, who have casino gift packages and robust campaigns, it gets a little tricky.

Baby boomers make up the core of the casino mainstay demographic. But as this group ages out of the casino experience, it's necessary to start seeding younger generations. Millennials make up the most dynamic age group, as they come into prime earning and spending years. Anderson DD gives this comparison when it comes to how casinos need to reconsider their marketing strategies:

  • Boomers and Gen Xer’s tend to spend 80% of their casino money on gaming, and 20% on food and entertainment
  • Millennials will be more likely to spend 30% on gaming and 70% on food, entertainment and non-gaming services
  • Unlike the “individualistic” Boomers and Gen Xer’s, are very social and group-oriented

With these things in mind, it's going to be very necessary for casinos to rethink and reinvest in keeping the attention of this generation.  The good news is that they can start by looking at their high roller packaging and rewards in terms of casino gift packaging.

Why Casino Gift Packaging Matters

Millennials crave customization and a personalized experience that shareable via Instagram and social platforms. Casinos already do great work with this via loyalty cards and other measures. But level up by creating a unique experience for casino patrons.

Creating unique gift packaging for your loyalty cards creates something that is, on face value, instantly Instagrammable.  Casino gifts could include poker chips, USB drives, commemorative coins, the sky's the limit. Whatever you want to tie into a marketing strategy, it's possible. But beyond that, these die cut folders (example to the side) present a huge opportunity for casinos to connect with customers.

Using casino gift packaging will help you target millennials by keeping your messaging short and concise, and allows for user generated content (photos and posts) to drive strategies. It also helps you craft a customized experience by creating more alternatives to their experience, allowing them to feel like they're driving. These opportunities might seem subtle on the surface, but fleshed out with a rounded campaign can lead to big gains.

The Appeal of Throwback Packaging via “Stranger Things”

Sunrise Packaging is proud to be a Minnesota company. We take pride not only in the work that we produce, but the work that’s done around us in “L’Etoile du Nord.”  That includes projects that inspire nostalgia, like any good throwback packaging.

So it was with no small amount of excitement that, when one of the lead characters of Netflix’s series “Stranger Things” appeared on screen wearing a hooded sweatshirt from none other than our local Science Museum of Minnesota, we were pumped to hear that the sweatshirt would be recreated.

And it seems that we were not the only ones. The Science Museum of Minnesota’s online store crashed upon the timed release. However, as the social media accounts for the museum reiterated, there was an unlimited supply. All told, it’s rumoured they sold over 80,000 pieces of ‘Thunder Lizard’ apparel in one day.

If that doesn’t speak to the buying power of nostalgia, I’m not sure what does.

How Nostalgia Can Inspire Throwback Packagingthrowback packaging

“Stranger Things” is a massive hit for Netflix. Any promotion that can tie back to it–directly or indirectly–is bound to have a leg up in the bid for capitalizing on consumer nostalgia. But it’s not the only example. At the height of AMC’s “Mad Men” popularity, brown liquor (whiskey, brandy, etc) outsold vodka and *clear* liquors for the first time in decades. The ad folk’s penchant for Old Fashioneds, as well as 60’s fashion, influenced a wide variety of industries.

Don Draper of “Mad Men” fame gave a stirring pitch in season one based on nostalgia, calling it delicate, but potent. When it comes to your business, helping customers connect with your brand is key. This is where nostalgia becomes a powerful tool.

NCR Silver lists some of the ways in which we can learn from the response to shows like these.

Throwback Packaging Allows Customers to Embrace Something Familiar

Familiarity is one of the most important factors in creating throwback packaging. It might link customers’ back to their childhoods or something else in their minds. This doesn’t have to be a literal recreation, like with the examples above. Taking inspiration within the culture and finding relevant themes can achieve the same effect.

Look for Opportunities to Blend Old and New

Like we said above, throwback packaging doesn’t have to be an exact recreation. Board games are one example. While games like Clue and Monopoly have been played for decades, they’ve found new ways to entice buyers. Game makers are resurrecting old packaging styles and typefaces, inspiring memories in customers.  However, they’re also adding modern, interactive features that appeal to today’s audience.

Attract Brand Advocates with Throwback Packaging

Creating brand advocates isn’t an easy thing for most industries. But from what we’ve seen, nostalgic packaging is one way there. Make sure to include hashtags, social channel handles, and other information is included on custom packaging. Not only does this generate more buzz, but allows you track more clearly as well!

Design a Conference Badge that Doesn’t Suck

Conference organizers always try to find ways to make their events unique and memorable, but there are some things which should be standard. Attendees, particularly those who might have had to deal with unpredictable flights or transportation/hotel issues, will always appreciate a streamlined check in process. It's a process where Occam's Razor is well-applied: the simpler, the better. This definitely goes for conference materials, like the conference badge.

Some conference materials are necessary evils: the plethora of paper collateral from sponsors, the (usually) hideous conference bag, and sometimes a conference tee designated to become bottom-drawer filler. Or, if you attend a lot of technology conferences like I do, it's worn daily by some of the less hygienic attendees for the conference duration. All things considered, most of these materials are expendable. It makes sense to refocus on the one thing that attendees will use and reuse: the conference badge, or name badge. Here are some tips to create a badge worth its salt. Or at least worth the irritation of remembering it daily. And, when the conference is over and the badge has served its purpose, Sunrise Packaging conference name badges are eco-friendly and completely biodegradable!

What Do Attendees Want in a Conference Badge

Choosing the style of a conference name badge can depend by industry. Tech conferences, which tend to be slightly more informal, typically use lanyards with the badge hanging around the midsection. If this is the route you want to go, be considerate of the variety of shapes your attendees come in (male, female, proportions, etc). Choose a lanyard with adjustable sizes so they can choose where it should sit.

conference badge with name, social identity

If the conference is an industry which tends to be more formal, consider a simpler conference badge that's more of  a traditional name tag with magnetic backing. There's little more annoying than putting holes in an expensive blouse or suit. Not to mention that it might hurt the fabric. Name tags also tend to be a little more discreet and elegant.

Design Around Attendee's First Names

What's the purpose of a conference badge? To identify the attendee as an attendee and to share their name/affiliation with folks. If space is at a premium, consider cutting last names. Some attendees also might not feel comfortable sharing their full name with rooms of strangers (networking aside). Access Event Solutions recommends the following hierarchy:

First Name (largest font)
Last Name (slightly smaller font than first name)
Company name/title (slightly smaller font than last name)
Other information (you get the drift)

What Else Might Attendees Want in a Conference Badge

If you go the magnetic, name tag route, you're probably maxed out on space after the above. However, if you go the lanyard route, the back of the conference badge is a great spot for additional information, like:

  • Conference schedule.
  • Wifi access information.
  • Conference hashtags/notable social channels.
  • Sponsor information (understandable to *want* to put it on the front, but lets be real: no one wants it there)
  • Embedding RFID or NFC technology within the layers of a conference badge substrate. Attendees can scan their badge to win prizes, session room counts, supply contact information to enabled vendors...the possibilities are endless.

For maximum readability, print information on the back of a lanyard upside down!

Make a Conference Badge Attendees Want to Keep

Name tags might not serve many purposes after the conference, unless they're well-designed and not obtrusively tied to the event. Keep your conference badge design simple, and attendees will appreciate the streamlined effort. Particularly if they're already a little jet-lagged.

New Holiday Packaging for the Elf on the Shelf

Summer is over and it’s time to start discussing Christmas! Okay, maybe not yet. But some holiday packaging markets are already preparing for the snowy season ahead.

One yuletide tradition you can expect to see a little early is the Elf on the Shelf thanks to a little help from Sunrise Packaging.

An Old Tradition Gets a New Look with Corrugated Holiday Packaging

If you’re not familiar with Elf on the Shelf–well, where have you been? Apparently not on Facebook. According to just about any family’s photo uploads, the seemingly timeless tradition of a rambunctious Elf (hailing from the Shelf) carries on year after year. This mischievous little critter appears to be the scapegoat for a wide variety of good-hearted, Toy Story-esque pranks around the house. But how exactly does the Elf get on one’s shelf? That’s where holiday packaging comes in.

Elf on the Shelf custom boxes, corrugated cardboard, b-flute

The (in)famous history of the Elf on the Shelf can be traced back to 2004. Over a cup of tea, an erstwhile mother-daughter duo decided to make a time-honored family tradition into a global phenomenon. Legend has it that Santa dispatches helper Elves around the world come December to keep an eye on families and make sure that the holiday magic is running high. This is the reason the Elf is often caught off the Shelf in a covert location. What results is a month-long game of hide and seek and, more importantly, a tradition the whole family can take part in.

But the Elf has to get delivered somehow and apparently Santa thinks holiday packaging is the best vehicle (other than the sleigh, of course). This beautiful custom box crafted by Sunrise Packaging. A 4-color printing finished with Custom Holiday Packaging from Sunrise Packaging, MNan eco-friendly aqueous print coating displays the warm colors of the season. These custom RSC boxes are made of B-Flute corrugated cardboard for a combination of durability and cushion, holding up in transit as well as storage between holiday seasons.

Sunrise was able to deliver on this holiday packaging just a week after art approvals. At that rate, Christmas could almost come twice a year! In any case, the Elf on the Shelf custom box was a pleasure to work on. A truly lovely piece of holiday packaging that will hopefully be a part of your family’s traditions this Christmas season. You can almost taste the eggnog, can’t you?

Formed Window in Rigid Box

windowed boxThe two piece setup box pictured here is clean, professional and durable. A retail and promotional package for a Made for iPhone Hearing Aid, the large box embodies the design and package construction similar to other Apple products. Rigid, turned edge boxes are perfect for these products because they extend the brand through simplistic design and high-quality set up. A smooth matte finish, the outside wrap intelligently uses clean white space to draw your attention to buzz words, and the product inside.

Recently at Sunrise Packaging, we have added clear thermoformed windowing to our long list of manufacturing capabilities. While the window on this box is produced differently than our NetBox Window, they both offer product display, protection and add value to the item. A thin gauge plastic is thermoformed to appropriate size of the box window and heat sealed to the blister coated liner and chipboard. Of course, the process to install a window in a setup box differs significantly from the NetBox  production, because that windowing is applied to a turned edge flat.

For true presentation in an enclosed package, a rigid box and clear plastic window is a high-end solution that combines the best of product display, graphic design and branding, and a protective, quality box.

Turned Edge Packaging: Youtube Compilation

Here is the newest youtube video from us at Sunrise Packaging! Instead of having to peruse our photo galleries and actively search for packaging inspiration, we though it would be best to put together a compilation for custom turned edge packaging solutions made right under our roof in Blaine, MN. Ranging from impressive sales kits, high-end retail boxes, to small USB packaging solutions and three ring binders, this video shows our capabilities as a custom packaging manufacturer.

Take a virtual tour of our turned edge packaging products. All of the projects you see in this video were custom made for each respective client and purpose. Whether these boxes hit the retail shelves or are simply for internal sales teams, the boxes, binders, and cases you see here are all rigid with custom graphics and other appropriate features (like foam inserts or a custom formed tray). For more in-depth product videos, visit our youtube channel or simply search: Sunrise Packaging, Inc.

Soul Music Set: Collector’s Edition

We found this creative box on the Packaging of the World creative packaging design gallery and just had to share! This packaging solution definitely thinks outside of the box and case. Made for a limited edition music compilation, Soulfinger music production and soul music artists have come together to create a collector’s item. This highly detailed, unique piece adds value to the music collaboration by making the entire set special and gift-like. Both the construction of the box and material choice are out of the ordinary, but in a way that catches the eye of the consumer and entices them to at the very least pick it up!
