Liquor Packaging: Ins and Outs

High end liquor packaging is becoming more and more common. Trends show that people are tending to spend more on alcohol to enjoy at home vs. going out. This means that competition is bound to increase on the shelves.

It can be hard to stand out in the sea of options at any liquor store. Unless a customer knows specifically what it is they want, the options are endless. And sometimes daunting. However, there's always one tactic all customers employ in some way, whether they know it or not.

Packaging and design is one of the top decision-makers when it comes wine and spirits purchases. A customer is intrigued by the marketing--that is, the shape of the bottle, design on the label, or other unique packaging element--and they buy it. Which is why the message a bottle sends by packaging is so important.

Liquor Packaging in Practice

Check out this example of liquor packaging we recently created for Select Designs featuring Lamarca Prosecco's limited release, Luminore. Luminore is a DOCG sparkling wine (meaning a high-end bottle) and considered one of the apex wines where the grape is concerned.

To design packaging that aids that impression, we started with the brand. Utilizing an organization's brand in packaging design is a key element to creating a connection for the consumer between the product and the producer. In addition to a beautiful bottle of wine, Lamarca is known for their striking light blue-on-black with foil stamping for extra pop. And you know that extra pop is everything when marketing a sparkling wine, right?

With the brand on point, we brought in a straightforward approach with a two piece set up box. Paired with custom flocked foam inserts, these boxes are sturdy, stable, and can securely hold a glass bottle with little-to-no potential for damage. Just don't test that theory *too* aggressively!

Wine & Spirits Packaging Drives Sales

Creating limited edition packaging like this barely scratches the surface of our experience in the wine and liquor world. Artisan liquor packaging is something we do well, and our packaging positively affects the bottom line.

Jewelry Boxes & Luxury Packaging in 2018

Luxury packaging is all about presentation. Ok, the argument could be made that most of packaging is presentation, right? But it's especially true when it comes to big-investment items. Fine watches, expensive jewelry boxes, unique cologne and perfume. All of these items tend to come in packaging that specifically serves to showcase the item.

Jewelry presentation boxes tend to be especially ornate. But companies don't have to rest on classic, old-fashioned approaches like velvet boxes and silk cushions. As consumers seek out more unique styles, packaging has become more unique as well. Bakers twine replaces ribbons, and magnets replace clasps. Like these custom jewelry boxes we just completed for Lenny & Eva

Custom Jewelry Boxes For the Modern Buyer

The societal take on jewelry gifting has practically passed into the realm of satire. A hinged box, usually satin or velvet, pops open to reveal something shiny and expensive sitting on a cushion of contrasting color.  The ads usually some sort of high drama, the kind of aspirational marketing that looks pretty, but is essentially unrelatable for the masses.

Modern audiences don't want that kind of fantasy. They want to know where the products they choose to patronize come from, maybe even who made it. Packaging trends reflect this desire for honesty and authenticity.

The boxes we made for Lenny and Eva reflect those desires. A brand designed to evolve with fresh designs seasonally while staying true to their aesthetic, we helped create jewelry boxes for them that can weather that evolution without going stale. These custom jewelry presentation pieces are wrapped in a plain textured paper and stamped with gold foil. Simple and classic, yet with a modern and unique spin that is all their own.

These custom retail boxes will keep products safe from harm while promoting the Lenny and Eva brand at the same time. It's the ultimate coup for retail packaging: the customer now has two pieces which they'll keep around their home, both the jewelry and the packaging.

Premium Packaging Drives Demand

The importance of packaging has always resided in its connotations. A plain brown paper wrapping might appear innocuous. But in previous decades, it might have hid a salacious purchase (at least, that's what David Hyde Pierce's 'Down With Love' character has led me to believe).  In 2016, people might be a little less inhibited, but packaging is still just as important. Especially premium packaging. In this era of internet shopping, subscription boxes, and a rapidly-growing marketplace, retailers need to find ways to hook customers and, ideally, turn them into repeat shoppers. Products need to find ways to stand out. According to a recent survey, investing in premium packaging is a one of the best ways for companies to do this.

Premium packaging

Premium Packaging as a Hook

Dotcom Distribution recently released a survey on driving customer loyalty.  They surveyed nearly 600 shoppers to find out what makes them tick. Or more accurately, what makes them return to certain retailers, and what makes them take their business elsewhere. One of the top ways in which retailers can retain customer is by investing in premium packaging, or custom retail boxes.

Tips to Retain Customers

According to Dotcom Distribution, consumers look for and reward:

  • Same day shipping options--in fact, fast shipping was even more important than product quality.
  • Premium packaging. Boxes that make products feel like opening a present, or turn a mundane process into an event (check out Sunrise's custom box section for ideas).
  • Error-free and transparent fulfillment process. Understandably, customers want to receive the correct order, and like to know when something is processing, then shipping, and when it's going to arrive.

However, customer loyalty can be fickle. Forty-seven percent of those surveyed chose not to return to a business with whom they felt the shipping and fulfillment process wasn't clear enough. However, that negative experience might be redeemed with premium packaging. If a company offers premium packaging, 40% of respondents would give the organization a second chance, and 50% would be more likely to refer them as well.

The key takeaways are two investments. The first lies in designing a process that keeps the customer in the loop.  Automation through a CRM can handle this. The second investment should be in product packaging. Specialized packaging demands specialized solutions, which is what Minnesota-based Sunrise Packaging does best. Bring elements of innovation to both your fulfillment and your packaging, and it's all but certain that you'll grow a repeat customer base. At least, that's what Dotcom Distribution has found to be true!

The Next Strides in Smart Packaging

smart packaging for an interactive consumer experience

What’s the future of retail packaging?

You have a product, you put it in a box and sell it. Not much of an evolution there, right?

Wrong! So very wrong. Packaging is everything. It’s not just us saying that–although we may be a little biased–there are numerous reports about the importance of having a strong presence at retail.

In an article for Forbes, Chris Wilder of Moor Insights and Strategy wrote about the future of packaging. While the article was geared more towards food packaging, Wilder did say that “no industry, segment, or market is immune.” And it’s true. There was a time when, say, jewelry packaging was very different from, say, produce packaging. But today, and moving forward, that distinction is breaking down. Especially as the world moves towards smart packaging.

What is Smart Packaging?

Also called intelligent packaging, or active packaging, smart packaging refers to a level of interactivity between the people and the package. It can be as simple as a QR code to track a shipped package–a technology that has been utilized for years–or as advanced as embedding microchips in packaging. While the latter isn’t widely used, the implication for what this means for the future of packaging in general is exciting.

An interactive experience, not just for package handlers or delivery persons, but for consumers as well. Imagine whipping out your smart phone, scanning a product at retail, and unlocking a variety of comparative, informative material.

Pretty cool, right?

In some ways, we’re already there. In other ways, we’re still a ways off. In the Forbes article, Wilder outlines the various custom packaging methods companies are currently using to vie for shelf presence at retail. He refers to the idea of hybrid packaging–custom boxes that are a blend of conventional retail packaging tenets and all the bells and whistles of luxury packaging. Hitting the stride between informing the consumer what the product is and does, and also establishing a stand-out presence in order to stay ahead of the competition. Wilder even mentions rigid materials! Now that’s an informed analyst.

Where the future of custom boxes and personalized packaging is heading, one can only speculate, of course. Whether or not you embed a microchip in your retail packaging is up to you. Still, the facts about presentation packaging remain true: standing out at retail is still the most important element. Eye-catching packaging, turned edges, and interesting materials will give your box a leg up in the retail arena.

Custom Paperboard Packaging

I noticed this post on the dieline and the intriguing custom packaging in this piece really caught my attention. Skoff Pies packaging was designed by Creative Inc. Skoff pastries are slipped into vibrant Paperboard boxes that are exemplified with graphic teeth trying to grab a bite of its contents.

This custom designed Paperboard SBS packaging utilizes an embossed logo that gives the Skoff product a first-class sensation. The packaging design shows off owner Donal Skehan’s eccentric personality and adoration of everything retro. Their unique branding has been effective for Skoff further separating them from the competition.

Paper Packaging Market Will Reach $236 Billion in 2011

With a global recession negatively affecting many industries there are some industries experiencing phenomenal growth. One example is the paper packaging market which according to recent research, is expected to hit $236 billion dollars globally before the end of 2011. Further, in emerging markets such as China, Brazil, and India, the growth is expected to persist. The consumer demand in North America and Europe is also on the rise.

So why the growth in this market? Various factors such as the ability to recycle, convenience, and cost-effectiveness can be attributed. The main advantage the paper packaging industry has through is its environmentally friendliness. Combined with quality, paper packaging is a viable packaging option in our modern world that is concerned about sustainability. As technologies and innovations continue to evolve, the paper packaging market only gets stronger providing manufacturers with more customized solutions.

This report comes as no surprise to anyone who has observed packaging in a retail setting over the past handful of years. Paper packaging is replacing many types of plastics packaging. Consumer behavior is changing, demanding less packaging that is recyclable and marketers and packaging manufacturers are capitalizing on the opportunities.

Packaging Successes

Successful packaging can lead to increased sales, monetary savings and a more positive public image. The following are some examples of packaging successes and their outcomes. Now would be a good time to take notes.

Successful-Packaging-Wal-mart-EnviroShellWal-Mart – a company that is known for attracting negative publicity but has been working toward sustainability – received positive attention recently for choosing Winterborne as their packaging provider. Winterborne was awarded a Converting 2007 Innovator Award for its EnviroShell package. EnviroShell is a 90 percent recyclable and recycled clamshell and the use of this packaging product reflected positively on Wal-Mart in the news media. The take-away? Sustainable packaging has benefits for the environment and for your business image.

Successful-Packaging-VaselineVaseline recently redesigned its brand through a packaging change. Prior to the change, the brand’s identity had been lost as it expanded. Different products in the Vaseline line had different logos and package designs and there was a lack of consistency. Blue Marlin stepped in and created a consistent, attractive, brand-cohesive logo that would stand for all Vaseline products. Blue Marlin made sure that each Vaseline product included classic blue plastic lids and they put a great deal of effort into matching the color of the logo to the blue plastic lids. Vaseline is now the fastest-growing personal care brand for its parent company, Unilever. What’s the take-away here? A strong, consistent brand combined with refreshing packaging can lead to an increase in sales for your business.

Successful-Packaging-Mrs-Fields-CookiesMrs. Fields revamped its retail packaging to reflect a design similar to the redesigned Mrs. Fields stores nationwide and to play on the nostalgia associated with the brand. Tempting shots of cookies adorn the new packaging, which is now more consistent with the Mrs. Fields brand. This new packaging has earned positive reactions from media sources, especially within the packaging industry, appearing in such magazines as Packaging World. The take-away? Refreshing your packaging can strengthen your brand image and generate recognition for your company!

Get to know the message behind your brand and whether your packaging reflects that. Not every product needs repackaging, but, as in these cases, refreshing your packaging may lead to positive consequences for your company and brand.
