Custom Gift Boxes for All Occasions

While the holidays draw near, anyone tasked with gifting turns their mind toward packaging at some point. While wrapping paper still reigns supreme, there's another option available. A more eco-friendly option, we might add. Gift boxes, especially unique boxes, can be all the decoration a gift needs this holiday season.

Custom gift boxes aren't a new idea, but they've long been the domain of luxury packaging. Think of Tiffany's jewelry, for example. Sparkly diamonds might come to mind, but so does their iconic robin-egg blue box and white ribbon.  In that example, their brand is clear. So much so that a Pinterest marketing effort proclaims, "There is no color quite like this."

 

Customized Gift Boxes

When A/Z Corporation approached us to create custom gift boxes for them, we knew it was an opportunity to build something great. As a company that markets itself as an innovative leader in their field, it was important to match that flair. To match the clean aesthetic of the organization, the set-up box style was chosen. Two piece set-up boxes are often used for high-end electronics, like smartphones and tablets, so there is an implied sense of luxury for the user. 

To enhance the rigid box, we wrapped it in a black ultima. This cover material is rich and gives both depth and contrast when used. Particularly with finishing elements that set it off, like silver foil stamp crowning the package with A/Z Corporation's logo.  Watch the video to get a sense of the unboxing elements.  Minnesota-made packaging at its finest.

While we love this project, there are more things that could enhance it further. A thermoformed insert, or custom foam insert, could add additional protection. And while the rigid two piece setup box is fairly well protected, adding a sleeve to the box adds more real estate for marketing content without ruining the sleek, clean look.  But that's just us working toward perfection.

While the setup box style was perfect for this project, there are many, many other styles of custom boxes that you can peruse to find the perfect one for your product and organization. Creative Packaging Ideas

Think back to the first time you purchased a brand that you’ve come to love. What made you purchase it? Positive reviews? Personal referral? Great marketing? Creative packaging?

Chances are, it was probably a mix of all these things, right? As an organization, you can start to cultivate your brand advocates, generating referrals and reviews, after you nail the last two things. And creating great marketing comes along with creative packaging for your products. 

Packaging is what sells your product. It conveys a feeling, cultivating a longing in your customers. So what does that look like…exactly? Well, it looks different for every product. Which is kind of the point of creating custom packaging design. But we’ve identified a few common trends that are ideal for attracting buyers.

Integrate Patterns

Using patterns in packaging design is a simple and efficient starting point. It can add depth and the perception of texture without the cost of embossing or inlays. Additionally, patterns can be used to evoke specific emotions or ideas. Blue and red stripes will inevitably remind people of the US flag; plaid has rustic or lumberjack connotations. Think through your pattern picks with unbiased audiences to evade any unintentional meanings.

We’ve written about CX, or customer experience, a few times before. It’s one of the surest ways to reach the hearts of your customers and start attracting influencers. Customer experience happens on multiple levels. It’s a design aesthetic that’s appealing. It’s including little touches that enhance the product. It appeals and delights, which is the heart of CX. Custom packaging options like this can include subtleties as well. Things like thumb holes, custom thermoformed trays, or nested turned edge boxes can add layers of pleasure for users. 

Make It A Gift

This is a common packaging design element used by liquor companies. Packaging products like a gift–regardless of whether the purchaser is actually *gifting* the product–immediately makes it more attractive on the shelf. This type of creative packaging doesn’t have to obvious, so halt on the bows and ribbons. Consider more tasteful elements, like an additional simple box or tissue paper inside the packaging. Some companies will even create complementary elements to go with the product, like branded lowball glasses with brandy. Or simply allow the idea of a gift season your creative packaging brainstorming sessions.

Luxury Packaging Afterlife: The Post-Consumer Purpose

Post-Consumer Waste. What does it mean?

 

Simplified, it means what you do with the box after you’ve opened your purchase. Do you toss it in the trash? Or do you find a way to utilize it, repurpose it.

 

At Sunrise Packaging, we try to use recyclable materials whenever possible. Eco-binders made from recyclable material and utilizing eco friendly, vegetable-based ink. Aqueous print coatings preserve paper from yellowing, making products more reusable, and they’re water-based. Using grades of plastic for thermoforming that can be recycled. In fact, RPET (Recycled Polyethylene Terephthalate) is a polymer made using reclaimed post-consumer material.

When you think about it, our packaging lends itself quite well to the fight against post-consumer waste. Even though they are on opposite ends of the spectrum, luxury packaging and corrugated cardboard boxes can both cut back on post-consumer waste. How? Well, with a little imagination for starters.

 

Let’s start with luxury packaging. The brilliance of luxury packaging is that it’s not only eye-catching, it adds value to the product itself. The same upscale element that makes it attractive in stores, makes it somewhat of a keepsake in the post-consumer market. Fine packaging can be used and reused as gift boxes and storage long after they’ve served their purpose. I use a magnetic cigar-style box to hold the components of a board game I’m designing. It feels like an heirloom. That magnetic strip, the soft–touch lamination–that’s something I can proudly display on my bookshelf. Not meant for refuse.

On the other side of the coin, rugged, durable corrugated cardboard–still a staple of modern packaging–is designed to be used again and again, and yet is recycled and recyclable. Now that’s eco friendly! Think of the last time you reused a corrugated cardboard box. I bet it wasn’t that long ago. Something always needs moving, lifting, or transporting. And cardboard, with its varying flutes, was there for you. While custom cardboard boxes don’t always have the flash of, let’s say, a rigid two-piece setup box, or the stiffness of a chipboard, but they are lightweight, disposable, and endlessly reusable.
