The sample kit we designed with them is a cigar style box with soft Nuba wrap, popping with 4 color printing in their trademark brand. The die cut sleeve teases a glimpse of the color, and adds a pop of flair to the kit. Overall, the effect is classic and enticing.

"Shouldering" Packaged Products

The basic setup box consists of two trays that slide together. It's a simple and relatively iconic design. Intuitive and accessible for all ages and abilities, it's popular for tech devices, tools, and more. It's also the basis of our new box style: the two piece set up shoulder box.

As you can see in the video and photos to the side, the "shoulder" is actually a small ledge on which the top tray of the setup box sits. Normally, a the top and bottom trays in setup boxes slide and overlap. The shoulder makes this box style even easier to open, and also adds an additional layer of protection to items inside. We love the presentation of the should set up box as well. The delight of a heightened reveal, or unboxing, is a simple joy that doesn't get enough credit. At least, we don't think so 😉

When the economy takes a downturn, there are some industries that actually see business increase. Liquor is one of them, so it's no surprise to us to see liquor packaging projects becoming more and more frequent.  Like this project for One Eight Distilling. While we capitalized on some existing box styles, the end result is a completely customized box and sleeve design. 

And this custom aspect matters big time in liquor packaging. A high percentage of purchasing decisions are made on the packaging alone. It becomes a bit of an emotional thing. Customers look for designs and elements that appeal to them in some way, and they buy it.  Drilling down on what appeals to the target customer base is your job. Packaging is especially important for distilleries and hard alcohol. It can be hard to stand apart, especially for undeveloped palates who aren't necessarily shopping for specific brands, but for what appeals to them. Hence the emotional buying piece. Taking a closer look at the photos above, you can see that there are several parts to the package. It starts with the standard box, and then a sleeve is layered on top. Both of these are screen printed in black ultima, but it doesn't end there. We also included some custom foam inserts to keep the product samples snug and protected inside. 

This liquor packaging example is striking and elegant. It's clear that this a high end product and deserves the consideration of the buyer.

Design "Inside Out"
By"inside out" we mean start with the immediate protection layer. A medical device box is more than just an outer shell. Usually, they require a foam insert or thermoformed tray. On top of that there might be a sleeve, and then the final outer box. The best way to know whether or not you need all of these pieces is to start with the the most precious part - the device - and work outwards. 

Run Packaging Decisions Past All Stakeholders
When you consider the hierarchy of your company, and make the assumption that *those* people are your only stakeholders, it's another possible space for mistakes. Make sure that you've chatted with more than just your CMO, CFO, and other c-suite folks, like the people in shipping who will need to send out the package. High End Packaging for Real Estate

Short supply and high demand is a recipe for a crazy housing market. Particularly as more and millennials start to dip their toes into home ownership. It can be daunting for mortgage brokers, homebuilders, and realtors to find ways to make an impact on this tech-savvy, immediate-results generation of homebuyers. Utilizing tools, like social channels featuring high end packaging, is one way to reach people.

In this Uber & DIY-focused economy, brand loyalty and expertise counts for less than it did in the past. Carrington Creek (located in Arkansas) is a homebuilder focused on building relationships as well. They've won multiple awards for quality, customer satisfaction, realtor excellence, and more. And when we began work on a special project for them, we knew it was going to be a special collaboration.

High end packaging always presents interesting challenges. At its heart, the best packaging utilizes simple design techniques. But the unique features are where we like to make it truly high end, the little touches that speak to a users tactile or visual senses. For this project, we used offset printing and a scuff free matte lamination.  This box is as sturdy as the homes they build, and just as classic with monochrome coloring. With spot UV over the logo, this is a box that pops. Maybe not as much as that champagne, but it's a coordinated effort!
