Liquor Packaging: Ins and Outs

High end liquor packaging is becoming more and more common. Trends show that people are tending to spend more on alcohol to enjoy at home vs. going out. This means that competition is bound to increase on the shelves.

It can be hard to stand out in the sea of options at any liquor store. Unless a customer knows specifically what it is they want, the options are endless. And sometimes daunting. However, there's always one tactic all customers employ in some way, whether they know it or not.

Packaging and design is one of the top decision-makers when it comes wine and spirits purchases. A customer is intrigued by the marketing--that is, the shape of the bottle, design on the label, or other unique packaging element--and they buy it. Which is why the message a bottle sends by packaging is so important.

Liquor Packaging in Practice

Check out this example of liquor packaging we recently created for Select Designs featuring Lamarca Prosecco's limited release, Luminore. Luminore is a DOCG sparkling wine (meaning a high-end bottle) and considered one of the apex wines where the grape is concerned.

To design packaging that aids that impression, we started with the brand. Utilizing an organization's brand in packaging design is a key element to creating a connection for the consumer between the product and the producer. In addition to a beautiful bottle of wine, Lamarca is known for their striking light blue-on-black with foil stamping for extra pop. And you know that extra pop is everything when marketing a sparkling wine, right?

With the brand on point, we brought in a straightforward approach with a two piece set up box. Paired with custom flocked foam inserts, these boxes are sturdy, stable, and can securely hold a glass bottle with little-to-no potential for damage. Just don't test that theory *too* aggressively!

Wine & Spirits Packaging Drives Sales

Creating limited edition packaging like this barely scratches the surface of our experience in the wine and liquor world. Artisan liquor packaging is something we do well, and our packaging positively affects the bottom line.

High End Packaging for Real Estate

Short supply and high demand is a recipe for a crazy housing market. Particularly as more and millennials start to dip their toes into home ownership. It can be daunting for mortgage brokers, homebuilders, and realtors to find ways to make an impact on this tech-savvy, immediate-results generation of homebuyers. Utilizing tools, like social channels featuring high end packaging, is one way to reach people.

In this Uber & DIY-focused economy, brand loyalty and expertise counts for less than it did in the past. For a business like realty, which are hugely relationship-based, this means that their basic marketing model needs to change. Referrals are still a big way to gain business, but reaching out on various mediums is another way to gain interest. It's the online shopping effect. We see something we like, we tap on it and can buy it.

Obviously, real estate doesn't work *quite* like that. But check out Carrington Creek's Insta, and tell me you're not enticed to learn more about these gorgeous homes. Particularly that signature Welcome Home box.

High End Packaging for High End Homes

Carrington Creek (located in Arkansas) is a homebuilder focused on building relationships as well. They've won multiple awards for quality, customer satisfaction, realtor excellence, and more. And when we began work on a special project for them, we knew it was going to be a special collaboration.

High end packaging always presents interesting challenges. At its heart, the best packaging utilizes simple design techniques. But the unique features are where we like to make it truly high end, the little touches that speak to a users tactile or visual senses. For this project, we used offset printing and a scuff free matte lamination.  This box is as sturdy as the homes they build, and just as classic with monochrome coloring. With spot UV over the logo, this is a box that pops. Maybe not as much as that champagne, but it's a coordinated effort!

Use Custom Packaging as Part of a Targeted Marketing Strategy

These welcome boxes are gorgeous on every level. They're highly Instagrammable, prominently featuring the logo, and create a true connection with the homebuyer. It's clear that this is a celebratory gift while still being functional.

But it's still part of a marketing strategy. If you're homebuilding organization or realty company is looking to put that extra panache into your marketing tactics, reach out to Sunrise to sketch out your own welcome kit!

Luxury Packaging Details

When it comes to luxury packaging, what do you think matters most?

Customers tend to notice different things, and those things aren’t always obvious to the manufacturer. While you might want a customer to read everything they can on the package, chances are they won’t. You want the customer to recognize the brand and colors, but how many actually do?

Well, it depends.

Luxury and high-end packaging rely on some common tropes to float ideas into the minds of consumers. Soft wraps. Bold fonts. Foil inlays. And more.  If you use secondary packaging, or a box encasing your main product, read on.

Luxury Packaging Details Not to Miss

The fastest growing luxury packaging market is the beauty industry. From make-up to lotions to creams, new products are hitting the market daily. But what entices a consumer to pick up a new brand?

Clarity

Slip Slant Boxes with box closures luxury packaging

If you’re using secondary luxury packaging, 40% of those surveyed said that an easy-to-read name was an important factor in whether they gave the product a second thought. Additionally, 33% need the product to be easy to see on the shelf or display area. Makes sense, right? Customers can’t buy your product if they don’t see it – and they can’t recommend it if they can’t pronounce it.

Durability

Additionally, customers want luxury packaging that’s durable. It might surprise you to know that there’s a market on eBay and other resellers for luxury brand packaging, from Lululemon bags to Cartier watch cases. Ensuring that your packaging is durable and hardy is a sure sign to convey high-end to customers. Thirty-six percent also note that the packaging needs to be easy to open. Depending on your market, this becomes increasingly important if you’re targeting baby boomers. Like it or not, aging hands aren’t as dexterous or strong as they were. Making luxury packaging easy to open helps them out.

Content

While it’s true that most people won’t read every bit of content created for your packaging, they do like to see certain things:

  • promised benefits
  • independently-conducted consumer study results
  • recognizable recommendation (hello, influencers)

Highlight any other important selling points. Is your product eco-friendly? Say so on the packaging. Give consumers every reason to pick up your product boxes.

Targeted High End Primary and Secondary Packaging

By using these factors to design your luxury packaging, you can start to learn to what customers respond, and make it better with every iteration. Another option is to do it right the first time. Contact Sunrise Packaging ASAP to leverage our expertise in the high end packaging market.

Options That Make For High End Retail Packages

High end retail packages speak to customers.

Not literally, of course (but who knows what might happen in the future?). But all it might take is a swift glance over a familiar box to evoke a memory. Positive, negative, those parts of are out of control for manufacturers and companies, but the point is clear: when you have a strong brand that speaks to luxury, quality and comfort, your packaging should reflect that.

Why Packaging Matters

Some might be quick to dismiss packaging as most important for mass produced consumer brands. It’s necessary for boxes to stand out on a crowded shelf, helping customers identify the one they want quickly. Or to catch their eye long enough to consider trying something new.

But it’s the seed of brand loyalty that transcends economic status. Whether it’s a loyalty to Captain Crunch cereal or to Cartier watches, customers who exhibit appreciation for a specific product still want to feel like they’re part of the club. Cultivating that seed is partly done through packaging.

Features of High End Retail Packages

It’s easy to assume what features a cheaper package might feature to cultivate brand awareness. Color is the main one, with graphics coming in second. But when it comes to high end luxury packaging, customers want a little more.

  • Make it a tactile experience
If you turned the lights off and ran your fingers over the packaging, what sense would customers get? Utilizing features like embossing, hot stamps, soft touch lamination, and more can stimulate the senses to entice customers in a different way.
  • Turn the mundane into the extraordinary
Opening and closing boxes isn’t something that registers with most people. Unless there’s something that stands out in people’s minds about it. Using a unique closure, like magnets or a custom molded snap enclosure, can do just that.
  • Create contrast
Light reflects differently on different materials and colors. Using a matte finish with glossy embellishments will draw attention to the various contrasting elements. Or simply mix up the colors, pairing black with white or other opposites that work well together.
  • Design a pause
An unveiling is a spectacular affair, and the first time your customers see your product–as their own product–should be as well.  One way in which package designers do this is to add a moment before the *big reveal.* It’s like going through the wrapping paper to get to a birthday present. Your excitement is heightened because you know this is something you want, and the paper is the only thing in the way. Badly designed processes can lead to buyer’s remorse and increased product return rates. All things luxury producers want to avoid.

Luxury Brand Packaging Tips

Luxury brand packaging is one of those things that's better experienced than described. However, as one of Minnesota's premier producers of high end custom packaging, we're well-situated to take a stab at defining some of the features that make packaging feel luxurious. Custom packaging can make a sizable impression. And it's our job to make sure that it's a positive impression as a result of great design and fine craftsmanship.

The tips below, adapted from TheDieLine, discuss how to appeal to consumers and leave an impression of high-end luxury packaging. It involves appealing to the senses in unexpected--yet pleasing--ways.  It's turning the mundane into the extraordinary. And it's easier than you think.

Tips for High End Custom Packaging

Include micro-interactions
You can guide users through a delayed-gratification type of an experience through micro-interactions. Micro-interactions are unexpected surprises about a package or a box. Utilize materials in unexpected ways (especially materials that convey the luxurious quality you want to convey, like our soft touch lamination). Design points of interplay for the user and the product. Magnet closure, pull tabs, these extras surprise and delight consumers.

Reduce redundant hand positions
Haptic feedback helps inform luxury packaging. Believe it or not, but according to TheDieLine, redundant hand positions required to open packaging reduce perceived quality. Use one simple criterion: how easy is it to open the package? Could it be opened blindfolded, or would it require tools and complicated handiwork? It's a testament to the classic simplicity and elegance of the cigar box

Contrast finishes
The way light interacts with colors and finishes affects how consumers perceive things. It can make the difference between a high-end box and a cheap one, or at least the perception either way. The finish should be smooth, crisp, consistent, and even. Incorporating foil stamping on a matte material is one of our favorite ways to create this kind of contrast. However, show restraint when it comes to contrasting.  Discretion and minimalism in design define understated luxury.

Luxury Brand Packaging Value Perception

When all is said and done, creating luxury brand packaging is all about creating a perception of high value. By following the cues discussed, it's possible to trigger the sensory cues that say "high-end." While these are tips that help convey luxury, it's important to remember packaging basics, such as:

  • Take measures to ensure packaging won't become warped or misshapen due to humidity, poor handling, etc.
  • Incorporate materials and finishes that are pleasing to touch.
  • Design an opening experience worthy of an unveiling video.

Consumers want to be thrilled. Discover ways to incorporate these types of interactions and sensations into your packaging to create something they'll love.

Out-Of-The-Box Custom Boxes

Custom boxes or packaging are the best way to catch the eye of a customers. If your product is new to the market, unique packaging is practically a necessity. We offer a variety of cool packaging concepts, but some places take it to another level. Sometimes eco-friendly, always creative, these packages are the serendipitous results of marketing and manufacturing.

Full disclosure: we can’t personally make any of these boxes (and trust us, you don’t want to suffer through our baking skills). Sunrise Packaging focuses on custom rigid boxes, designed to high standards with luxurious finishing touches. While the products below definitely bring a unique vibe to presentation packaging, Sunrise products always convey luxury.

Our favorite out-of-the-box custom boxes are…

  1. The Pizza Box Pizza
Vinnie’s Pizzeria in New York is reinterpreting sustainability. Their pizza box pizza is, literally, a pizza within a box made of pizza. You can eat your box, then eat the pizza. Our only question: do you get to choose the flavor of the box? (UPDATE: the flavor is non-negotiably their personal Sicilian style).

  2. Come Home Gazpacho Andaluz
The quandary of how to carry multiple bottles easily and without occupying both hands has been tackled in the liquor world, but not so much in other food and beverage arenas.  Gazpacho Andaluz answers that question with this box. It’s a one-handed operation with proper weight distribution. We’re loving the minimal, yet iconic, design. Sunrise doesn’t use these types of materials.  Our focus is on higher-quality and resistant types of packaging, but this is definitely a custom design.

  3. Nude Jr. Strawberry Milk
Milk comes from cows. Strawberries come out of the ground. Put them together, and the packaging is what you get. If drinking out of a strawberry-inspired udder is weird, don’t worry. The opening is at the top.  While Sunrise does do custom plastic packaging, this isn’t one of them.

  4. Sapore di Nonna Pasta
Pasta. One of the few foods that’s completely scalable in how it’s prepared, and enjoyed equally by poor college students and those in higher tax brackets. It’s delicious.  Not in our wheelhouse, but fun. This product includes pasta and the spices to enhance it, but here’s the catch: it’s actually an invitation to Sapore di Nonna’s launch party.

While all of these custom boxes are unique, there are several other aspects that went into their creation and design. Each one houses not only a product, but embodies the brand as well. The best custom boxes are the result of collaborations, both internally and with vendor selected to create it. As one of the premiere creators of custom boxes and packaging in Minnesota, Sunrise Packaging works closely with clients to develop quality products that reflect the organization.

Sunrise Packaging works closely with clients to create memorable experiences.  Rather than the above, though, we use other methods. Like foil stamp packaging, thermoforming, and turned edges, to name a few. What do you want to convey with your packaging?
