Our customizable Permavue™ albums are an extremely versatile packaging item that offers the best of thermoforming and turned edge manufacturing! A custom formed album adhered to rigid turned edge gives our clients the opportunity to apply their design to the exterior of the album. With a lamination of either gloss or matte finish, this piece gives a high end, professional feel for an otherwise simple or mundane item. We like to be able to combine our manufacturing processes and the Permavue™ album does just that! We manufacture both the turned edge flats and the thermoformed interior here in house! With a large sealing department, we heat seal the two main pieces together to create a compact album that can hold up to 30 disc pages. We offer a few different plastic materials to choose from, choose from white or black in order to coordinate with your artwork. The best part about using thermoforming in this album is that the specifications of the tooling are so specific that it creates a way to firmly shut the album without any extra closure needs. The album, when shut fits perfectly snug and protects all of the discs inside!
Thermoformed plastic clamshells can come in just about any shape or size. The reason for their popularity in retail and supplier markets is largely due to their versatility and wide range of capacity. The basic purpose of custom thermoformed packaging is to hold an item as specifically as possible. Think about it, whether they are electronic gadgets, children’s toys, cosmetics, or tackle like this picture shows- each product sits nicely in a secure package that is formed to its own size and shape. The packaging shown here is a great one to highlight because it accommodates a selection of items that could be much more attractive to a consumer. Shopping is full of decisions, and giving shoppers the option to purchase a combination could vastly improve your sales.

The majority of the thermoformed packaging solutions that you will see are made from a thin gauge plastic material. As an inline thermoforming manufacturing company, we believe that thin gauge plastic is one of your best bets when designing and producing custom plastic packaging products. Small sized blister packaging and clamshells from Sunrise can be made with a wide variety of different thing gauge plastics that offer different benefits suited to your needs. In retail and food industries, thin gauge plastic is the most common used material. This is because of its malleability and quick forming capabilities. Most often received in material rolls, thin gauge thermoplastic can simply be setup with the inline thermoformer and automated through the process. For fast moving items in the retail world, this is beneficial to both retailer and supplier!
As a packaging manufacturer and converter, we like to see combination packaging happen under one roof. As you saw with the turned edge blister display, we try to find ways to use our strengths to add valuable packaging solutions to products, marketing campaigns, and even internal appreciation and organization. The boxes shown here are a great example of how we can combine both rigid set up box production and in line vacuum thermoforming to create a spectacular display box for a new product launch. The item that belongs in this box is a revolutionary hearing aid that can be programmed to work in sync with an iPhone or other apple product. The rigid setup box has clean and informative graphic design that reigns true to Apple design by using clean white space and letting the product sell itself! Soft touch lamination a durable chipboard create a secure and sleek home for the new device. As you can see, there is a clear window that displays the product so shoppers can see the item without the risk of tampering. The clear window is not your standard window you would see in stores, it uses a thicker, more durable PVC that offers real protection. The PVC material is then thermoformed just slightly so when it is sealed on the inside of the top tray, the plastic and rigid chipboard lay flush together- a new process we implemented in order to create the perfect look for our customer. The clear window is not the only plastic thermoformed element; the inside tray is a white plastic that is formed specifically to hold the device and a literature pamphlet.
Plastic packaging solutions come in many forms. Not all thermoformed plastic packaging needs to be a clear clamshell or custom blister pack. For example, shown here is a marketing set and retail box that we made for Besita Boutique, a high end swimwear retailer. The white plastic tray inserted in our customizable cigar-style Netbox™ matches the color scheme while providing a much needed cavity to hold a turned edge Flashpad™. Sometimes it is the small details that make a big difference in the display and presentation of a marketing kit. Custom plastic trays show forethought as well as the investment you made showing that each and every prospective client is equally important.
When making packaging decisions for retail products, there are a lot of factors that come into play, and many important things to consider. Custom plastic thermoformed packaging comes as no exception. In order to have an all around quality packaging solution, it needs to be protective and practical while simultaneously marketing your brand and product. Protection and practicality go hand in had for custom packaging solutions. In order for a plastic blister pack or clamshell to properly serve its purpose, it needs to insure that the product is safe in shipping, that it is tamper proof in-store and can therefore be purchased and put to use! Simplicity is also a key component of quality packaging. Many times with plastic clamshells and blisters, shoppers find it difficult to actually access the product that they just bought! Create a design that offers protection but can also be easily opened in the household- there are a few tricks out there to open difficult plastic packaging, many of which come with a bit of risk. Finally, use packaging to your advantage by adding value to your in-store presence. You worked hard on making the packaging design, now make it work for you. Incorporate your marketing message and branding strategies when you design artwork, tooling, and more!
For high quality custom thermoforming, the process starts with an aluminum tool that plastic is formed by. In order to accurately fit products into a custom clamshell, blister pack, or tray it is important that the tooling match the layout and dimensions of the set.
As a turnkey manufacturer, we offer in-house tooling services to keep production in extremely close proximity to the tooling department to ensure accuracy and close communication. Watch our youtube video below to watch how it’s made. We take all necessary action to make sure that the custom tool works properly in our inline thermoformer, and will produce a mock-up of the product to confirm accuracy and quality. To create an ideal package for retail products, cosmetics, and more, consider custom thin gauge thermoforming to create a tamper evident, eye-catching package that displays your product in a competitive retail environment.
While we emphasize the security and display that is associated with custom thermoformed clamshell packaging, there are other plastic packaging solutions that can offer similar display benefits and tamper evidence in retail. Using branded artwork is much easier to do with blister packaging, because the concept of the item requires a blister card anyways– might as well print with eye-catching graphic design! The thermoformed cavity is then heat sealed onto each card holding the product in place. See here our example of our custom-made packaging for the Pocket Monkey product. When it comes to security, the blister pack keeps items protected from their external environment. However, since they are easier to open than clamshells, there is still a possibility of tampering. While this does not protect the product itself, it does protect the consumer, making any evidence of tampering obvious to the shopper. Plastic blister packaging are commonly used for pharmaceutical products, but are also extremely popular in general consumer goods packaging.
While thermoforming is an extremely versatile and somewhat common manufacturing practice, when it comes to plastic packaging production, it definitely finds itself useful in the retail market. Usually for small-scale products, and electronic devices, thin gauge thermoformed clamshells or blister packs are very commonly seen in retail environments in just about any department.
A highly common practice is to packaging gift cards and credit cards in custom thermoformed clamshells. While there is not much to protect from tampering with a card, it does offer a great deal of useful security! With bar codes and other promotional passwords shown on these cards, any shopper could possibly hack the information and end up with free money or services. By packaging each card in their own individual compact clamshell, you protect the item all while keeping the branding and design of the card on display.
A huge added benefit of plastic clamshell card packaging, is its convenience factor. Product placement at the store could be in its designated department, as a supplemental item in another department, or at the ever-popular impulse purchasing spot; the checkout aisle. With custom thermoformed packaging, you are able to create a unique, branded package that can also hang on the shelf with hanger tabs to prominently display card promotions at eye-level.
While our turned edge products don’t always make it onto our thermoforming blog, our latest addition to the customizable, cigar-style Netbox™ is a thermoformed window that adds display with rigid protection. Made with a rigid PVC material, unlike other clear windowing that uses flexible PVC, the NetBox™ View from Sunrise Packaging combines turned edge and thermoforming manufacturing processes to offer our clients even more packaging options and custom features to make a completely unique and representative product. The thin gauge PVC material is formed to the desired size and shape of the window in the top of the turned edge box. This way, this “tray” is placed in the die-cut turned edge flat in order to lay flush with the covering surface area. This extra step in planning and production adds accuracy and attention to detail; of which any high-end client would take notice.
