Custom Thermoforming Materials

Custom thermoforming serves a variety of industries. Its versatility is due to the process, which can work with a variety of plastics. Focusing on molding heated plastic, thermoforming is a growing industry serving many other industries, from healthcare to technology. Packaging systems can communicate value to customers. Custom thermoforming is an ideal solution that protects and organizes materials, creating a great experience for users. The aeasthetics don’t stop there, with a variety of plastics used for thermoforming.

These plastic thermoforming materials each have their own qualities and benefits.  Here’s a rundown of some of the materials with which we work at Sunrise Packaging (Blaine, Minnesota).

Custom Thermoforming Materials & Properties

PET (Polyethylene Terephthalate)Thermoformend trays for the health and beauty products.

PET is a super-clear material, affording customers a great view of a product (we love it for custom vacuum-forming in retail packaging). Another reason why it’s popular? It’s easily recyclable.

PVC (Polyvinyl Chloride)

PVC is one of the strongest custom thermoforming materials, but just as malleable as any other. PVC is versatile in other ways as well. It can be translucent or colored, opaque or clear. It’s also recyclable, of course.

 PETG (modified Polythylene Terephthalate)

PETG is a modified version of PET that turns it it into a cross between PET and PVC.  It has a lower melting point than PET, and retains the strength and versatility of PVC.

RPET (Recycled Polyethylene Terephthalate)

Noticing a trend? PET is a popular base for custom thermoforming. This version–RPET–is made from recycled PET. It’s slightly weaker than standard PET, though.

PS (Polystyrene)

Polystyrene is among the hardest and stiffest custom thermoforming materials. It’s a popular option for anything that needs to be punched or cut (think CD cases, smoke detectors, etc).

Custom Thermoforming Applications

These different materials each have slightly different benefits and uses. Depending on what you need from your packaging, Sunrise can recommend the perfect solution.  Contact us today to learn more!

Custom blister packaging offers excellent display advantages and tamper evidence in retail.  Branded artwork is considerably easily done with blister packaging, since the concept of the item involves a blister card, it makes sense for you to print with dazzling graphic design! The thermoformed cavity is then heat sealed onto each card holding the product in place.

For security, the blister pack keeps products secured from their exterior environment. However, since they are easier to open than clamshells, there is still a chance of tampering. Although blister packaging does not safeguard the product itself, it does protect the consumer; therefore any evidence of tampering is obvious to the consumer. Custom designed blister packaging is an extremely popular choice for general consumer goods packaging.

Custom Designed Clamshells

I consider custom designed clear plastic clamshells provide an enormous advantage for retail packaging solutions. I think it speaks to people that your package has nothing to hide. Your product is there for the world to see and your customer can see the product and not feel like they have any expectation to be disappointed by misrepresentative contents.

Clamshells provide safety and visibility that are designed specifically to product are frequently custom made with inline thermoforming manufacturing. Plastic material is roll-fed in to the former and takes shape of the Teflon coated aluminum tool that is being applied. Clamshells often are very cost-effective and usually have easy to open functionality that provides a great custom packaging solution.

Advantages of Clamshell Packaging

Clamshell packaging is distinctive because of its hinged, one-piece design. The hinges allows them to open like a clamshell. Clamshell packaging frequently comes with a single hinge and usually includes a hanger tab so it can be hung on a store hook.

I love the advantages for both the consumer and the manufacturer. Let’s look at a few.

Highly Observable for the Consumer

This type of packaging is usually made using high transparency material. For the consumer, the product inside can be observed from many different angles

Highly Secure for the Manufacturer

Clamshell packaging can be made highly secure, allowing manufacturers to package highly valuable products in them while diminishing the possibility of theft or tampering. This increased security makes it perfect for retail.

Total Enclosure

Clamshell packaging provides total enclosure for the product inside without separate lids or backings. This ensures that the entire package is one piece.

At Sunrise Packaging, we design and manufacture visually interesting and functional plastic thermoformed clamshell packaging. We are a leader in manufacturing thermoformed clamshell packaging solutions to industries such as retail, medical, entertainment, media and cosmetic. We would love to work on your design and concept from start to completion.

The placement of each blister is in line with the accompanying descriptive text. As both a turned edge manufacturer and custom thermoformer, we love projects like this that use our strengths!

Here are some of our most recent custom albums made here at Sunrise Packaging. A combination of custom vinyl exterior and internal thermoformed trays, these packaging solutions are extremely versatile when manufactured. With all of the steps, materials, and equipment in house, we are able to take a concept and make it a reality. First, a custom vinyl flat is made, and scored to fold over much like a binder or album.  A plastic thermoformed tray is then heat sealed to the vinyl exterior to create the internal organization of the packaging solution. These albums are great for branding internal information and media products that require a combination of printed literature and disc/flash drive documents. By creating a cohesive set package, you are able to keep all necessary information in one, protected place.
