AT&T Announces ZERO Draw Charger
Monday, March 22nd, 2010Did you know that leaving your phone charger plugged into the wall, regardless if your phone is plugged in or not, draws electricity? I didn’t. In fact, most mobile users are unaware of this. In the U.S., it’s enough to power 24,000 homes per year, or brew three to four million cups of coffee each day*.
Introducing AT&T’s Global First Automatic ZERO Draw Charger. Available only in AT&T stores in May 2010, the charger does not waste any power when left plugged in. Additionally, it improves charging efficiency when powering a device. It also features a “block and cable” design for maximum interchangeability, allowing customers to use the same charger for future handsets. Over time this will cut the number of chargers being produced, thus reducing future landfill waste.
How does it work? The Zero Charger works by automatically sensing when a mobile phone is not plugged up to the charger and cutting the power supply from the wall socket. Pretty nifty!
The cost of the unit will be the same as existing replacement chargers which is great news for customers and more reason to change to a greener solution. The charger will be sold in packaging with 100% recycled paper. AT&T recently announced a transition to smaller and more eco-friendly packaging for the wireless device accessories. The change means elimination of more than 60% of the paper and more than 30% of the plastic previously used for AT&T’s accessory products.
*Energy saving calculations based on the following assumptions by AT&T: 277 million wireless users in U.S., minimum one phone per user; user charges device 3 to 4 times per week for 8 hours; 80% of users leave charger plugged in wall socket; average charger wastes 170 mW (0.17 watts) when idle.

Packaging Personality
Monday, March 15th, 2010Meet earBudeez™ Jay D and friends. So cool you wouldn’t even want to open them.
The fun new packaging of earbuds from JDA, Inc. packs a lot of personality, literally. JDA developed the earBudeez™ personalities with the earbuds as eyes in different positions to convey various attitudes and emotions. The innovative design of the earBudeez™ connects the product with various consumers to influence their buying behavior.
The design concept came from research done by Audiovox. They found that people were choosing their earbuds like a fashion accessory for their iPods and mp3 players. The research also showed that packaging played a key role in consumer decision making.
To no surprise, the earBudeez design won a 2009 Gold Pentaward- Congratulations to JDA, inc!
Recycling Robot
Monday, March 8th, 2010
Here at Sunrise we love progress. Especially when it involves the environment, so a recent blog post at Ecogeek sparked our interest. The post brought a cool invention to our attention. The design of the recycing robot by Osaka University and Mitsubishi Electric Engineering Co. They have created a robot with laser-sensing technology that can differentiate six different types of plastic from all other garbage. The 5-foot 6-inch by 6-foot 9-inch machine identifies the plastic materials by analyzing the reflectivity of five different wavelengths of lasers on the materials.
The purpose of the robot is to streamline the recycling process and increase the amount of plastic that gets recycled. With this robot taking care of that sorting, people can recycle with the assurance that the robot will take care of the details.
Although at 55,000 dollars this isn’t exactly being marketed as a home sorting device it certainly has a lot of potential for industrial sites.

Tips For Creating an Effective Catalog
Wednesday, March 3rd, 2010Jazzing up your company catalog isn’t a quick process. It takes a lot of thought, opinion polling, and research to try and get it right. Here are a few tips in creating an effective catalog.
1.The first tip is to not try and jam everything into a few pages to be cost effective. This will overwhelm your customer and will likely leave the pictures too small. Instead try weaving white space effectively into your design. This is especially true for photos that you want to draw the customer’s attention.
2. Another way to create an effective catalog is to create consistency from page to page. A layout that your customer finds easy to navigate will certainly help this process.
3. Finally, ensure that the color scheme is in sync with the color scheme of the company. This means company cards, website, etc. This should be a continued branding effort. Therefore it should be a continuation of what the company looks like not a deviance from it.

The New Ketchup Packet
Monday, February 15th, 2010The ketchup packet, stuck so long in it’s inconvenient form that it seemed destined to remain that way. You know the issues, hard to open, hard to dunk, certainly not kid friendly. To top it off there’s never enough ketchup in one packet so you have to repeat the process. This causes a repeat of the prior issues. Well after all this Heinz, the company that literally turned our ketchup bottle upside down, has now reinvented the packet. For this we are forever grateful. The new and improved ketchup packet seems to cover it all. It offers more ketchup, more kid-friendly, a dunk side, and a squeeze side. Heinz even made it more closely match their grocery store product line in terms of shape and color. It’s clearly labeled making it easy to open and understand. The product is currently being tried in test markets. I’m excited for it to take it’s rightful place in the fast food industry.
New Uses for CD Cases
Monday, February 1st, 2010With the invention of MP3 players and online music stores you may not be buying CD’s anymore. However, that doesn’t solve the problem of what to do with all of the old CD cases from when you were. Luckily a few creative minds have come up with some options to put those cases back into use. These alternative uses can be more than just Saturday morning art projects for your kids, although that is a possibility too.
1. The jewel case poster display.
This is a project you’ll want to make sure you layout and measure carefully before moving ahead with the cutting. It’s the old cliche, measure twice cut once. This is done by taking a poster of your choice and cutting it into sections that fit into the CD case. The cases are then hung on the wall to recreate the poster with a little edge and artistic twist. It seems to work especially well for music posters, but the sky is the limit.
2. The CD case photo collage.
In order to create the collage simple print out photos you want to incorporate and place them individually in cases. Then attach them to the wall with wall putty in whatever order you want. Photos that are printed in black and white and then placed in colored jewel cases take on an especially unique and cool look.
3. Create a Book- Kid’s style
Kid’s love art projects. They especially love art project where they can show off their decorating, drawing and writing skills all at once. Creating a book out of old CD cases is perfect. Allow them to decorate the case with stickers and whatever else they may find interesting to create the cover. Then cut pages that fold and fit into the CD case. Attach it by double-stick taping the front and back page to the cover or by gluing it.

Hobbies and Memories Inside a Binder
Tuesday, January 19th, 2010We collect what we treasure. The binder has become a widespread method for holding onto these collections and keeping them safe. For avid sports fans it means pages of baseball or football cards. For the younger generation it may be pages of Pokemon cards, or coin and sticker collections.
The binder has really been put to use as a photo album as well. It’s kept together collections of old faded photos. Wedding albums display the big day and baby books show off the new arrival.
For those who like to go above and beyond photo albums there are scrapbooks. Scrapbooking albums come in all shapes and sizes. Scrapbooking continues to gain momentum and has now become the most popular craft segment.
Finally, it may be used to store all of the secret family recipes, and perhaps some of the not so secret recipes as well. Whatever it’s use make sure to pick out a binder that fits your function.
