So what’s with the picture above? Looks like a typical deck of cards right? Wrong. It’s t-shirt packaging for the recently launched Burn Card Clothing.

This company wanted to capture originality in their packaging to make their quality, originally designed t-shirts stand out that much more. The shirts are packaged in old school boxes that look like a big deck of cards. On the inside a tag is attached to the shirt itself that tells its size and has the look of a playing card. All around, the shirts and the packaging are truly unique creating a positive out-of-the-box experience for their customers.

Putting Poly into Packaging

PolyBox 300x200 Putting Poly into Packaging

Packaging can take many forms and can be made out of many different materials. One popular choice is the use of poly. Poly is a flexible material, making it durable against everyday use. Poly packaging is very versatile. Its light weight allows for easy shipping and its many options for design makes poly packaging a must for promotional endeavors. Poly enables packaging to have a crisp and clean look, giving it an excellent presentation factor.

There are two types of poly packaging: polyethylene and polypropylene. Polyethylene is the most popular plastic in the world. It is classified as a thermoplastic, which means it can be melted to a liquid and remolded when it turns solid. Polyethylene is interesting in that it was accidentally discovered. A German chemist in 1898 was applying heat to another compound, when he realized the extreme heat and pressure produced polyethylene. Polypropylene has a little different structure in that it serves as both a plastic and a fiber. It has a higher melting point than many other plastics, making it a common material in dishwasher safe food containers.

Poly packaging is an outstanding choice for customization. Offset and screen printing are popular options for poly projects. Specialty printing like foil stamping, embossing, and debossing are other options to add creativity, uniqueness, and character to any packaging project. Poly packaging can take many forms including boxes, binders, totes, envelopes, and folders. The versatility and durability that poly packaging offers gives companies that ability to stand out from the competition.

A Lesson About Packaging

packaging world A Lesson About Packaging

Packaging is what we use to enclose and protect products for distribution, storage, and use. It acts like a coordinated system of preparing products for sale and end use. Packaging also is a tool that provides information for consumers. The way packaging informs helps marketers  send messages to consumers and help portray the benefits a product provides. Packaging also provides security, convenience, and containment.

Have you ever wondered how packaging got its start? The first packaging used was made of natural materials and came in the form of baskets, bota bags, wooden boxes, pottery vases, wooden barrels, and woven bags. Paper used in packaging can be dated back to 1035, when vegetables and spices were wrapped in paper after they were sold to consumers. In the early 19th century is when iron and tin plated steel were being used to make cans. Also at that time is when paperboard cartons and corrugated fiberboard boxes were first introduced. Advancements made in the 20th century included transparent cellophane wraps and panels on cartons. These helped to improve food safety. Aluminum an other types of plastics were introduced as well.

Packaging provides many benefits for protecting and securing products. What started many years ago as a way to transport vegetables and spices, has grown into a multi-billion dollar industry. Packaging has made many innovations along the way and it will be interesting to see how it progresses further.

Custom DVD and Blu-ray Packaging

Monday, September 13th, 2010

As DVD packaging and Blu-ray packaging continues to evolve, much is put into custom packaging to create a splash and increase sales. Traditional DVD cases and Blu-ray cases are still the standard, but as we take a look at a few examples, we find that companies are customizing the packaging to target their audience and make their releases stand out.

toy story trilogy 300x183 Custom DVD and Blu ray Packaging

Last winter, Toy Story 3 shattered box office records and is due out on DVD and Blu-ray on November 2, just in time for the holidays. Pixar recently showed what they have in store for collectors by revealing the custom packaging for their Toy Story Ultimate Toy Box Collection. The collection will include Blu-rays, regular DVDs and digital copies of all three Toy Story movies- a total of 10 discs.

The packaging features a square box on the outside with a Toy Story character on each side. On the inside, an original wagon toy box holds all of the discs. By going the extra mile with exclusive custom packaging, Pixar is hoping to attract both collectors and youth to the box set that is retailing on Amazon for $65.99.

Not only big budget film releases like Toy Story merit custom DVD packaging. This example of DVD packaging comes from the Gutek Film Company who’s celebrating their 15th Anniversary by paying homage to the artistic Italian cinematography of Michelangelo Antonioni. This collection features eight classics targeting film art lovers (lovers of multi-level sophisticated film art that is difficult to perceive).

Package design for the project is simple containing two boxes. The main “grand box” holds a smaller box inside where the DVD discs and booklet are held. The book jacket is made of black cardboard and has a logo cutout. On one side of the disc holder sheet is information relating to Antonioni’s works while the other side features specially shaped envelopes that holds the DVD discs.

eBay Promotes Green Packaging with Eco Boxes

ebayeco2 300x206 eBay Promotes Green Packaging with Eco Boxes

eBay just launched a new set of eco-friendly reusable boxes as part of a pilot program to make packaging a little greener. Starting in October, the company is giving away 100,000 shipping boxes to eBay sellers, and encouraging reuse. According to eBay, if each box gets used five times, the program could protect nearly 4,000 trees, save 2.4 million gallons of water, and conserve enough electricity to power 49 homes for a year.

The boxes engage sellers by emphasizing potential benefits to the planet with friendly illustrations and copy. Tips for greener packing include finding “a new calling for old phone books.” A happy little bird asks, “Where to next?” And to track each box’s journey, there’s space to write a note so the next person to receive it can see just how far its come.

Each eBay Box is made with 100 percent recycled content certified by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC), printed with water-based inks, and designed to require minimal tape. And once it reaches the end of its useful shipping life, it’s fully recyclable. From the box’s fine print: “Don’t worry, it will come back as something nice, like a birthday card or movie theater popcorn bag.”

The company will also set-up a special web page for the recipients of the boxes, on which they can register their box and give updates on its condition. The company will use the information to track the boxes and plan future replacements when a box gets too damaged.

Perfume Packaging Reveals Your Personality.

Friday, April 2nd, 2010

Did you know that you link scents with memories?
A single smell can bring a flood of memories. We connect smells with people, places, and feelings, so it’s no wonder people are willing to pay up to $100 for 3.4 oz. of perfume. (Actually the most expensive bottle of perfume is a whopping $215,000!)

So why pay $100 for a few fluid ounces? It’s a combination of fragrance, brand, and you may have guessed it – packaging.

Why does it matter who makes the perfume or what bottle it comes in?
Because consumers buy perfume that reflect their personality. Daring, Classy, Flirty, Fun, Sweet, Sexy, Cute, High Class – all of it is said through the  fragrance and packaging. As Christian Dior said, ” A woman’s perfume tells more about her than her handwriting.”

Take Dolce & Gabbana Light Blue
Its packaging is simple, clean, chic. It catches a consumer’s eye because it looks classic.
Combine a timeless look with a trusted name and you have a best seller. Dolce & Gabbana Light Blue was introduced in 2001 and has been at the top of women’s perfumes best sellers lists since.

Another trend that has exploded since entering the market is celebrity fragrances.
Everyone from David Beckham to Avril Lavigne has a line named after them.

Although celebrity scents don’t necessarily have the longevity of classics like Chanel No. 5, celebrity scents sell very well. Britney Spears, Paris Hilton, Hilary Duff, and Sarah Jessica Parker have experienced enormous success with their lines.

One of my personal favorites has probably caught your eye at the department store too. It has unique packaging you can’t pass up.

Harajuku Lovers by Gwen Stefani, which carries five different scents in five doll-decanters. The cute bottles appeals to a young adult age group. Stefani also personalized it to appeal to her fans. (Her backup dancers are called Harajuku Girls.)  She made it more personal for each buyer by giving them the option of choosing the doll that reflects who they are. Stefani also launched the perfume in limited edition packaging called “Sunshine Cuties” and “Snow Bunnies.” Sunshine Cuties is set to release Spring 2010.

Harajuku Lovers has only been on the shelves for two years but  it appears it has found a permanent place in buyers’ hearts.

Here are more perfume bottles for you to check out – maybe you’ll find your new signature scent. (Click to view larger images)

The Beauty of Cardboard

Friday, December 11th, 2009

Many look at cardboard and see it as a simple packaging material.  To often it finds its way to the trash instead of being recycled.  But as the cliche goes, “one man’s trash is another man’s treasure.”  This is the case for Mark Langan, who is an artist based out of Ohio that has made his life’s work out of corrugated boxes.

As his website states;

…I see it as an endless supply source that I purge from my trash and neighborhoods, reusing it towards my creations.  Artwork that is intriguing to the viewer whereas one might ponder quite some time over. A form of green art, that makes a definitive statement with its contribution to the recycling movement.

With a touch of brilliance Mark takes “reuse” to a new level.  Revamping simple cardboard into breath taking works of art.  Here are a few samples of his work.
