Toys for Tots

Friday, December 19th, 2008

“I have found that among its other benefits, giving liberates the soul of the giver.”
-Maya Angelou

With the holidays fast approaching our instinctive response it to kick into high gear, running from store to store taking care of all of our holiday related errands. But before the Holiday buzz sweeps you away, stop for a second to help those less fortunate than yourself. Not only will helping out in the community make you feel better during the holidays it will truly benefit someone who is experiencing difficulties. Too often kids seem to be the most affected. Sunrise wants to give needy children hope this year by donating toys to the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots program.

The goal of this program is to collect new, unwrapped toys during the months from October to December and to distribute the toys as a holiday gift to needy children in the surrounding community. The U. S. Marine Corp states that the mission of their program is to “spread the message of hope to needy youngsters that will motivate them to grow into responsible, productive, patriotic citizens, and community leaders.”

Over the 58 years of this programs existence, Toys for Tots has collect over 332 million toys and helped over 158 million needy children. This program has been fortunate to help many children throughout their years of service but their overall goal is to help 14 million needy children each year. This year, in our area they are especially in need of children’s toys for ages 0-2 and 15-17, although toys for all ages are encouraged and welcomed.

Today is the last day to drop off toys at Sunrise. So far, we have collected more than one-and-a-half containers. If you’re in the area this morning, please stop by with an unwrapped toy for those kids whose holidays may need a little extra cheer. Every little bit helps!

It is in small efforts that we help one another. We want to than the Sunrise employees and surrounding businesses for their generous contributions to give back and to help the children in your community.

Have a happy holiday season.

Cold Crack — Cousin to Jack Frost

Wednesday, November 12th, 2008

Driving in this morning, the trees were coated with a thick layer of snow that looked just like frosting. It’s beautiful to look at, but can be dangerous when we ship products to you.

During the winter a strange phenomenon sometimes comes over our plastic products. When the temperature gets frigid, so do our products, some of which are made from plastic, and everyone at Sunrise cringes and looks on with concerned faces as we try to avoid the damage commonly known as “cold crack”.

We do everything we can to protect your products from winter cold cracking.

We do everything we can to protect your products from winter cold cracking.

It happens most every year and you may have experienced it previously. In the winter you may take the extra precaution of ordering plastic products further in advance than you normally would. This is smart because Sunrise Packaging may need delay your shipping if temperatures reach below zero degrees.

This is the point at which the risk for cold crack increases dramatically and we will not ship your products if we believe they will arrive at your doorstep damaged. In order to protect your purchase, we wait until the risk for cold crack decreases.

Cold crack most often occurs during handling by the carrier. Sunrise will palletize and stretch-wrap larger shipments for further protection. As long as the carrier leaves these shipments intact, cold crack damage should not occur. Individual carton shipments that are handled by the carrier in a “baggage handler” fashion are most susceptible to cold crack damage.

It is wise to let products warm up from frigid temperatures in your facility before handling.

Keep this in mind when the temperatures begin to descend this winter. Order a few extra days in advance and know that even if your order comes a few days later than usual, Sunrise is doing everything it can to fight the forces of nature and defend your products.

Just call us your Super-Plastic-Protecting-Heroes-Of-The-Winter… here to save your products from the cold and protect the investment you have made in our products.

Economic Downturn: How packaging can help

Tuesday, September 9th, 2008

We are currently going through what many economists are fearful of declaring as a recession. For many companies this means that business has slowed down: products are moving off the shelves more slowly and there are fewer orders for products and services. At Sunrise Packaging, we are always thinking about how we can benefit you and your business. In a time of economic downturn, it is clear that packaging can help.

When profits begin to drop, many of us look for the cause of changes in consumer habits. At this time, it seems that the cause is the economy, which results in an intense competition among providers of products and services. In this situation, we suggest taking a look at your perceived value as compared to your competitors.

How your customers perceive the value of your product, services or company compared to how they perceive the value of a competing company’s product, services or company can affect whether your customers continue to choose you. This involves a delicate balance of price and benefits. How do you increase the value of your business offerings in the minds of consumers without lowering your price or changing your product?

In public relations there is a theory developed by Michael Levine called the Tiffany Theory. This theory holds that if you put an ordinary ring in a classic blue box from Tiffany’s, people would perceive this ring to have a higher value than if that very same ring was placed in an ordinary box. Not only would they believe that the ring, when placed in the Tiffany’s box, would have a higher value, they would be willing to pay a higher price for it!

In other words, how you package your product, literally and figuratively, plays a role in determining the value of your product in consumer minds. How do you want consumers to view your product? How can you creatively display your product in a way that sets your product apart from others in a positive way?

These are important questions to think about when determining how your company will continue to thrive even in a bad market. At Sunrise Packaging, we are experts in creating professional, creative packaging that can set your product apart from the pack. In a competitive market this can be an important asset.
