sun chips part 2 199x300 What is That Noise?.......Part 2

If you recall our blog post from October and the many stories that surfaced about SunChips new compostable chip bag, you will remember all criticism they received. Consumers were annoyed and confused by the loud noise the packaging made. Well that didn’t stop SunChips from moving forward and improving what they started. They are trying to get it right this time by introducing a new version of their previous attempt, that is less noisy.

The problem with the first round of biodegradable packaging was the adhesive. Their was a razor thin layer of adhesive that was used to separate the inside of the bag from the outside logos and additional information. This adhesive created a noise barrier. The barrier led to uncovering decibel levels of the chip packaging. The noisy bag had levels of 80-85 decibels and has now dropped to 70 decibels for the new packaging. You can find the new packaging in stores now and it will be available in the original flavors. They are waiting to hear feedback before they issue the new packaging for the rest of its product line. They hope this new packaging will produce a better outcome, without the outrage that happened before.

cd smoothies3 300x200 Presenting......The DigiPak
I’m sure we have all heard of the famous jewel case, but have you ever heard of a digipak? A digipak is an innovative and patented style of CD or DVD packaging that is similar to the standard jewel case, but typically consists of a gatefold paperboard or card stock outer binding instead of plastic. It also features one or more plastic trays that are attached to the inside. The main benefit of a digipak is that it is shatter proof and allows for greater graphic display. Digipak CD packaging can also be configured to fit specific needs. It can be designed to hold anything from discs to literature and artwork. The way the digipak folds can also be specifically designed as well. From a simple book-like fold to multiple folds, the possibilities using digipak packaging are endless.

Digipaks also allow creative flexibility. Traditional jewel cases only allow artwork to be inserted in the back and front covers, with a place to insert a small booklet on the inside. Digipaks have the benefit of being able to emboss letters and images, which is a technique that creates an impression on materials, giving packaging a unique look and texture.  Bright colors and elaborate graphics are able to be used as well as incorporating literature and booklets if needed. The trays that are used in digipaks are versatile in that they can be configured in multiple ways. They can come in different colors and are impact resistant and eliminate the risk of breakage.

Digipak packaging also enhances promotions and marketing. They are an inventive and creative way to promote a product, service, or company. Digipaks can be easily distributed and are an attractive way to get a message out to attract customers and clients. They also provide a more eco-friendly option than traditional jewel cases because less plastic is used. Digipaks offer many benefits for disc packaging and are used by many companies.

binders 300x233 Past, Present, and Future of 3 Ring Binders

Binders have always been an integral component to any office, home, or educational facility. They allow for papers and other materials to be organized and kept in one place. Binders create a tidy look and presentation, also allowing possessions to be protected. Binders have been around for many years. What was once an organizational tool in the 1850′s is still an organizational tool today. Let’s take a look at the past, present, and future of binders.

Past:
In 1854, patents were filed for both the 2-ring and 3-ring binders by a man from Rhode Island named Henry T. Sisson. He realized a specific problem people were experiencing. The problem was that people had loose leaf paper but no idea how to organize or store it. So Henry began designing to come up with a solution for this problem. That is where the ring binder started. The first binder had 2 rings and then evolved to 3-rings. The first 3-ring binders were covered with heavy cardboard like binding and the metal parts were made of cold rolled steel. It was not until 1899 that binders were actually for sale. Chicago Binder and File Company was one of the first companies to do so.

Present:
Today, binders can be found everywhere. They come in many different shapes, sizes, materials, and designs to fit any need. Ring metals can be shaped in a round ring, D-ring, and angle D-ring. Binder sizes can range from as little at 1/2″ to over 3″ capacity. There are also a lot of materials that binders can be made out of. Poly, vinyl, and recycled materials are the most popular choices. Binders can also come in many different colors and patterns, and can also be customized with foil stamping and screen printing to meet specific needs and tastes.

Future:
Binders will continue to be a useful component for organization and storage. We will also see an increase in eco-friendly binders which are binders made out of recycled materials and soy based inks. This new type of binder allows for a more sustainable option for organizational needs. The trend towards customization will also be prevalent with binders as well.

What started almost 160 years ago as a way to store loose leaf paper has grown into an organizational phenomenon and continues to be a popular choice for storing papers and other materials.

Shrink Wrapping 101

shrink wrap Shrink Wrapping 101

If you are like me, you have heard about shrink wrapping, but never fully understood what it really is. I  never realized that shrink wrapping was a process that businesses use to tightly package and secure products.

Shrink wrapping is the process of covering a product with clear plastic that shrinks when heated to fit tightly around the shape of a product. Shrink wrap is also the term used for the plastic used in the process. Shrink wrapping plastic can shrink to 50% of its original size and can be purchased in large rolls or a variety of pre-cut sizes. Shrink wrapping allows for products to be kept protected and clean. A shrink-wrapped item in a store will remain clean even after many people pick it up and examine it, plus it will remain completely visible.

A variety of products are packaged using the process of shrink wrapping, including: cartons, boxes, beverage cans, and boats. The ability to heat the shrink wrap is often done by automated equipment, where it is sent through a heat tunnel or oven for shrinking. Heat guns are also used.

Many companies use shrink wrapping to protect their products. Keep your eyes open for shrink wrapped products. See how many you can find.

Greenzys is an eco-friendly children’s brand, taking going green to a whole new level. They are producing toys that are environmentally safe and educational, while also being fun. The plush toys are made from soy fibers and non-toxic dyes in socially responsible factories. The packaging these toys come in is also eco-friendly because it is made from recycled paperboard. Peat the Penguin for example, is a supporter of recycling, reusing, and reducing waste, while Yew Yew the Panda grows bamboo to prevent erosion and create oxygen.

The toy isn’t the only way Greenzys is being eco-friendly. For every toy purchased, a tree is planted. A printable digital certificate documenting the planting of the tree will allow you to cherish the moment. A portion of each purchase will also benefit the Environmental Media Association and the Arbor Day Foundation. Greenzys’ main goal is they want to promote green living and teach eco-friendly practices to children through their toys.

baby carrots 247x300 Baby Carrots Put on Their Helmets

When I hear the words baby carrots I think of a healthy snack or food a rabbit would eat. I have never associated baby carrots with football or humor. Well Bolthouse Farms, in conjunction with the growers alliance ‘A Bunch of Carrot Farmers’, are trying to reposition how baby carrots are viewed by consumers. This alliance has decided to promote baby carrots as a snack that is convenient by using packaging that playfully mocks other snack food marketing tactics. The campaign “eat ‘em like junk food” has put humor and energy into this marketing strategy. If you read our blog post from September 29th, 2010, you will see how this has started and grown.

Since we have entered football playoff season, the campaign has been taken one step further. They have created football themed packaging that will capitalize on the enthusiasm and excitement of the playoffs and the idea that snacking is a popular thing to do while watching the games. The goal is to encourage consumers to give up eating regular junk food and eat healthier foods.

So when you start to plan your playoff and super bowl parties, keep your eyes open for the clever football themed packaging.

From Cupboard to Fridge

Monday, November 8th, 2010

When you are hungry for something where do you look first the cupboard or the fridge? Common sense dictates that people open their fridges more frequently than their cupboards. The fridge is a dynamic place and the cupboard has become a thing of the past. Companies have realized this change in food placement and have developed their packaging in relation to it.

Heinz, maker of the famous red hot dog and burger condiment, has taken the traditional tin can for baked beans and evolved it into a container that can fit on the average fridge shelf. The innovative design is a plastic jar with a screw top. It was developed for consumers who may use more than one can when cooking because it contains the equivalent of two and a half standard cans.

Baking soda, which was once known as a baking ingredient, is now moving from the cupboard into the fridge and is acting as a deodorizer. The little yellow box made by Arm & Hammer is designed to fit in the fridge and also possesses a clear strip to see how much is left. This package design allows the fridge to stay fresh and takes up little room.
