cokearcticwhite 300x166 Coca Cola Changes Packaging for a Cause

Next month, Coca-Cola will be turning their iconic red packaging to white. Arctic white that is. Coke is teaming up with the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) for a bold new campaign to help protect the Arctic home of polar bears. Coca-Cola will be committing up to $3 million to WWF’s polar bear conservation efforts while also asking fans in the US to join in the campaign by texting donations to the cause. The first-ever white packaging for Coke encourages $1 text donations to WWF.

More than 1.4 billion white Coca-Cola cans will help raise awareness and funds marking the first time ever that Coke has changed the color of their red cans. The all-white cans will feature the image of a mother bear and her two cubs making their way across the Arctic. White packaging will be on store shelves through February 2012. Anyone who wants to help the polar bears can text the package code to 357357 to donate $1 to WWF. They also can donate online at ArcticHome.com, starting November 1. Coca-Cola will match all donations made with a package code by March 15, 2012, up to a total of $1 million.

‘Polar bears inspire the imagination. They’re massive, powerful, beautiful and they live nowhere else except the Arctic. Their lives are intimately bound up with sea ice, which is now melting at an alarming rate,’ said Carter Roberts, President and CEO of World Wildlife Fund. ‘By working with Coca-Cola, we can raise the profile of polar bears and what they’re facing, and most importantly, engage people to work with us, to help protect their home.’

Twitter logo 260x300 Twitters Growing and Essential for Business

This isn’t a how-to guide for businesses to use Twitter. Rather, it’s the latest evidence and support that if you’re not using Twitter for your business, you should be!

Twitter CEO Dick Costolo recently announced that Twitter has more than 100 million active users, half of them are logging in daily. WOW! And right now 250 million tweets are posted each day, up from 100 million per day in January. That’s some serious growth.

But so what? It’s growing. Good for Twitter. What’s it to me and my business? Well, how about these five key facts from a recent study about the relationship of Twitter and consumer behavior:

1. 60% of brand followers are likely to recommend brands to a friend

2. 50% of brand followers are likely to buy products from that brand

3. Consumers follow brands for exclusive content, promotions, and to be in the know

4. 75% of consumers on Twitter have NEVER “un-followed” a brand

5. One-third of brand followers this year are interacting with brands compared to last year

And don’t expect the growth to slow down. With Apple’s recent release of iOS 5, Twitter sign-ups have tripled and been a big boost for the company.

Tips for a Green Halloween

green halloween wishes1 300x225 Tips for a Green Halloween

It’s only one week away. How about some tips to go green this Halloween?

1. Use the WHOLE pumpkin: Don’t just carve it and throw it in the trash November 1st. Use the pumpkin seeds and the carved out pieces for food. Pumpkin seed recipes are all over the web and make for a delicious snack. Puree the pieces of pumpkin you carved out for recipes that call for fresh pumpkin. And if you have a backyard compost pile, throw the rest of the pumpkin in there after Halloween.

2. Skip the expensive costumes: Save some cash by avoiding those expensive plastic costumes in the retail store. Make costumes made of reusable or recycled materials. Check out Green Halloween for ideas.

3. Use recyclable bags for trick-or-treating: Avoid using the orange plastic Jack-O-Lanterns that are used for a couple hours and discarded in the trash. This will also save you money too! Reuse plastic bags or even better, how about those cloth bags you have lying around? They’re strong and can hold more candy than you can dream of your kids bringing home for you.

4. DIY Decorations: DIY means Do It Yourself!. Making your own decorations is fun and expands your creativity. Give a little character to your decorations this year. It’s also a fun activity to do with the kids. Great Dad has some great ways to decorate DIY for Halloween.

If you’ve watched the news in the last few weeks you have heard reports about the listeria bacteria outbreak found in California Cantaloupe.  Most recently, River Ranch Foods LLC has recalled 2154 cases of bagged salad that tested positive for listeria, although no illnesses have been linked to the product. With 23 deaths, the listeria outbreak is the deadliest known outbreak of foodborne illness in the U.S. in more than 25 years.

To combat future listeria outbreak researchers are developing packaging to combat listeria and e-coli growth. Researchers Hany Anany and Mansel Griffiths (University of Guelph) are using harmless viruses called phage to kill targeted harmful substances that could be present on the surface of foods. A phage, in simple terms, is a harmless virus that can kill bacteria. Phage has been approved by the FDA as a safe food additive in certain food products.

Flexible packaging consists of bags, envelopes, pouches, sachets, and wraps made of easily yielding materials such as film, foil, or paper sheeting. When filled and sealed, flexible packaging acquires a pliable shape.

A new study shows that flexible packaging demand is expected to grow 3.8% annually, reaching $18.2 billion by 2015. According to the market study by Freedonia Group, the growth will be the result of source reduction efforts by retailers and packaged good firms. Pouches will be the fastest growing sector in the flexible packaging market with an average annual growth of 4.6%.

Reusable Packaging Helps Haiti Relief Efforts

Monday, October 17th, 2011

It has been almost 2 years since the catastrophic earthquake that devastated Haiti and the relief efforts are still in full force. The Hemp 4 Haiti Project is an effort focused on providing sustainable, reusable goods to victims of the disaster. It’s a great project with a packaging twist.

Using high quality hemp, packaging is created to provide many of the victims with non-perishable goods. After the goods are consumed, the packaging can easily be unwoven and used in many practical applications that are vital to the relief efforts. Hemp 4 Haiti packaging also eliminates waste and pollution by being reusable and sustainable. Check out the photos below.

Old Vinyl Records Pump Up the Volume

record1 300x200 Old Vinyl Records Pump Up the Volume

Need an amplifier to pump up the volume on your smartphone? How about “Change the Record”. That’s the newly designed product from London-based Paul Cocksedge. Old vinyl records are reused and then turned into a stylish, retro amp that has the vintage look of a phonograph. Of all the reused products I’ve seen, this might be the coolest one. The best part is that there’s no need for wires or electricity.

The 12″ records are heated and molded into a sound-enhancing conic shape which boosts the volume of the music being played from a smartphone. Of course there’s no volume adjustment but this beauty is all about aesthetics.

A Glimpse at iPhone 4S Packaging

Wednesday, October 12th, 2011

There’s no doubt that Apples new iPhone 4S is the biggest tech story with its release this week. In fact, Apple announced Monday that the new iPhone sold 1 million in pre-orders the first 24hrs it was available. That was a new record for the company beating their 600,000 pre-orders for the iPhone 4 in 2010.

As the world gets set for the release of iPhone 4S this Friday, we’re now getting a glimpse of the device including its packaging. The iPhone 4S packaging is very similar to the iPhone 4. Check out the photos below.

Apple also announced that they’ll be paying tribute to their recently deceased mastermind CEO, Steve Jobs, with a private event to be held on October 19.

Have you ever wondered which brands are most popular on Facebook? Famecount has a list the shows the most “liked” brands on Facebook worldwide. The keyword is “Like” here. Facebook “Likes” are supposed to have less value in the future as Facebook just launched a new metric called “Talking about”. Pages with a high “Talking about” rating are the ones with the most compelling content because the metric will measure user-initiated activity related to a page. Activities include wall postings, “Likes”, commenting, and sharing a page. Marketers have to focus on coming up with compelling content in order to get users to interact more with their pages to score higher “Talking about” ratings.
