B2B Social Media: Four Essential Ingredients

b2b 300x200 B2B Social Media: Four Essential Ingredients

Using social media to promote a brand or company has become something businesses incorporate in their every day operations. The use of Facebook and Twitter is nothing new involving businesses to consumers but what about in the business to business (B2B) environment? This is a different concept. B2B companies are not trying to convert potential consumers into customers, instead they are trying to convince other companies to buy their products or use their services.

So how does social media for B2B companies actually work? Here are four ingredients that should be in a company’s B2B social media strategy:

# 1: Build a reputation of expertise
Why would a business buy from you if you don’t know what you are talking about? The implementation of a blog has a big impact on how knowledgeable you are. While a B2B blog may not have many followers, it still will impact decisions of your customers. For example, if a potential customer comes to your company’s website and sees an active blog with insightful posts on your product or service benefits or industry knowledge, they may be interested in coming to your business for their needs. Having knowledge and expertise shows credibility.

# 2: Research your customers
Social media is no longer just a communication tool, but a research tool as well. A vast amount of data is produced every day on social networks and blogs which can be used to learn a variety of things such as current trends, customer profiles, and even competitor information. The ability to know what your customers are saying and what your customers’ customers are saying can help you be one step ahead and give you a competitive advantage.

# 3: Increase networking
A business should always be working to gain connections and build relationships with other businesses and potential customers. The use of social media is a great way to increase networking for your business, because you never know when a contact can turn into a customer or an advocate for your business. There are many tools that can be used to network using social media. A new social media site seems to surface every day. The options are endless.

# 4: Learn from others
Social media is also a learning tool. Every business should want to learn more about their industry, competitors, trends, and anything else that pertains to business. Social networks are filled with useful information, the only effort needed is to actually look for it. Blogs and publications that relate to your industry are filled with information. Or you can even connect with people who comment on your own blog. Twitter is a great place to follow business leaders and learn from them. There is so much useful information on the web. The only effort needed is to take the time to find it.

B2B social media is all about networking and listening. Although we are more used to seeing B2C social media, businesses should not underestimate the power it has. Social media is evolving every day and business should take advantage of its benefits.

Breast Cancer Ribbon Paint 171x300 Packaging is Thinking Pink This Month

Fall has a new color and it no longer red, orange, and yellow. The month of October has transformed into the month of pink. Breast Cancer Awareness Month has made an impact on October and has evolved into more than just the familiar pink ribbon. Many companies have now been participating by using cause marketing and incorporating the color pink into their packaging.

Cause marketing involves cooperative efforts of a for profit and a non for profit company for a charitable cause. This gives corporations a chance to get involved in creating awareness and generating support for the cure. Also proceeds from the products using pink go to the Susan G. Komen Foundation. Creative initiatives such as raising awareness via Facebook and Twitter has also surfaced this month.

Pepperidge Farm is donating $0.50 to the Susan G. Komen Foundation for every Milano moment that is shared on the Milano Facebook page.

Campbell’s Soup is donating $250,000 to the foundation which is roughly 3.5 cents per pink can.

A Glimpse Into The MYSTICal Future

cokemystic 300x224 A Glimpse Into The MYSTICal Future

The future. Such a fascinating idea. When I think of the future, I think of watching Back To The Future II as a 10 year old destined for a hover board and auto-lace Nikes (which Nike has filed a patent for recently by the way).

After seeing the new MYSTIC package design for Coca Cola bottles, it made me reminisce on those several occasions of watching Michael J Fox traveling to 2015 in pure envy. Are we now living “In the future”?

The design was created by French designer Jerome Olivet. The racy, aerodynamic style of the bottle and the classic red color gives the feel of a supernatural future world and adds even more power to a strong brand.

As we’ve seen many soft drink and bottled beverage companies change their package design on several occasions this past year or so, the transformations have all had an emphasis on the environment and eco-friendly packaging. Further, Coca-Cola has been in the news for their proactive approach on sustainability. This design however, focuses on the strength and legacy of one of the biggest brands in history. Very interesting approach.

We’re not sure when or where this design will hit convenience store coolers. But with such an attractive design, you’re sure to notice when it does.

Coffee Company Take Risk by Changing Iconic Packaging

eight oclock1 300x266 Coffee Company Take Risk by Changing Iconic Packaging

Eight O’ Clock Coffee has been around a long, long time. With lasting power comes a rich history. As one would imagine, the company has gained a loyal customer base having such a rich history which sometimes makes change a very hard and risky endeavor. With that said, Eight O’ Clock Coffee has recently taken a risk by changing their iconic red packaging that has given their coffee the same look for as long as anyone alive on this earth can remember.

In taking such a risk, Eight O’ Clock Coffee had two priorities: First, to design their packaging so that loyal customers could still relate to the product. Second, to implement a fresh look into their package that would attract new (younger) customers.

To tackle the first challenge, the new package design carries over a number of key qualities from the old package including the same classic logo and color coding for the different varieties. The words “New Look Same Great Taste” are also featured in the new packaging to ensure that the package is different but the product is the same.

As for attracting the younger customer to their product, Eight O’ Clock Coffee gave their packaging a contemporary look that is bold, crisp, and refreshing.

To develop designs further, the company went to its customers for input using sweepstakes as one method and also interacting with their customers on Facebook as another. Sweepstakes asked their customers to vote on different packaging designs while offering chances to win up to $5,000 worth of groceries for the year. To roll out the new packaging, Eight O’ Clock Coffee put a game on their Facebook page where fans can win daily prizes of free coffee by matching the old packaging with the new packaging within a certain time frame. The brand has been using Facebook to grow its fanbase and sales within the last few years and it’s working.

Founded in 1959, Eight O’ Clock Coffee has a history of involving their customers in company decisions. In fact, that’s how the company got its name. According to legend, the company came up with the name by conducting a survey asking people what time of day they drank coffee most. The majority of those surveyed reported that they typically drank coffee at 8 a.m. and 8 p.m., which is why company went with the name “Eight O’Clock Coffee.”

Stonyfield Yogurt Now Packaged in PLA

stonyfield 288x300 Stonyfield Yogurt Now Packaged in PLA

Stonyfield Farm has announced its switch from petroleum-based plastic to plant-based (PLA) plastic in their packaging. The PLA plastic packaging is derived from corn and is the first plant-based container in the yogurt industry. After researching the life cycle of their packaging, Stonyfield Farm concluded that PLA is a better option than petroleum-based plastic in terms of energy use and greenhouse gas emissions.

Sustainable packaging has been a huge push in the last few years with Wal-Mart leading the charge. By downsizing packaging, Wal-Mart hopes to cut down on consumer waste and reduce its global packaging 5% by 2013.

Stonyfield yogurt packs are not compostable or recyclable yet because there is only one facility in the US that recycles PLA. Stonyfield hopes to help change that by having other companies follow their transition into plant-based PLA plastics.

PLA packaging has also been in the news lately as Sun Chips changed their snack bags to PLA before changing them back due to consumer complaints of the bags being too noisy. You can read more on that here.

Stonyfield Farm has posted a video that explains more about their switch to PLA plastic packaging.

Effectiveness of B2B Social Media Marketing

grungy social media icons 297x300 Effectiveness of B2B Social Media Marketing

Social media in a business setting has begged the question…how does this whole thing translate into sales? It’s a great yet complex question.

Now that social media has been around for a short while, marketers are beginning to understand how to use the medium to its full effectiveness. And hard selling via Facebook, Twitter, etc. is not the way to go. In fact, it’s a definite no-no to over-saturate your company’s blog, Twitter, & Facebook feed with advertisements and overt sales propositions. Using these social networks tastefully for business requires one to “know their audience”. It’s ok to inform your social networks about your company and engage in conversation- that’s the point. Show your personality.

Social media for business gets even more tricky in a B2B arena. Businesses are especially less patient with other businesses blatantly selling on social networks. B2B companies need to look at their social media strategies as branding devices rather than a virtual member of the sales team.

A recent social media marketing survey shows what B2B companies are identifying as the most effective uses of social media. The sample size was approx. 1,800 people.

What is That Noise?

Wednesday, October 13th, 2010

sunships bag1 205x300 What is That Noise?

Frito-Lay’s introduction of its 100% compostable packaging for SunChips has left consumers annoyed. This new bag was launched in April 2009 and although the new bag is made from biodegradable plant material and breaks down in the environment , the bag is too noisy. The bag has an unusual molecular structure that resulted in consumers comparing the noise levels to lawnmowers and jet engines. A Facebook group called “Sorry but I can’t hear you over this SunChips Bag”, has also contributed to the outcry.  Consumer complaints and a decline in sales are the reasons SunChips are returning to its old, nondegradable packing for five of the six flavors. The noisy packaging will remain for its original flavor. This little “crunch” in eco-friendly packaging will not stop Frito-Lay from finding other packaging solutions. They will still continue search in finding sustainable packaging options.

The Colonel Introduces Eco-Friendly Packaging

kfc logo The Colonel Introduces Eco Friendly Packaging

KFC, famous for its red and white buckets full of chicken, plans to replace its old Styrofoam side dish containers with a reusable eco-friendly version to cut down on packaging waste.  This has been influenced by a watch dog group called Dogwood Alliance Team, which has criticized KFC for using its buckets that contribute to the destruction of southern U.S. forests.

These new containers are 100% propylene that are used for side orders such as coleslaw and mashed potatoes. They are actually dishwasher and microwave safe, meaning customers can actually reuse them! They also require 25% less energy to produce than the old containers and generate fewer greenhouse gases.

Frozen Dinners Find New Sophisticated Packaging

frozendinner 300x208 Frozen Dinners Find New Sophisticated Packaging

Love Design Company took on the task of creating sophisticated packaging for Cook’s premium frozen ready meals. Love took the concept of a “special night in” and created wood carvings for the illustrations on the packaging. They also wanted to emphasize the fact that the meals are extremely gourmet and different from other frozen ready meals.

Something that makes Cook’s meals unique is the fact that they are handmade and not created by machines. Cook has been preparing meals in the UK since 1997 focusing on high-quality ingredients and sophisticated recipes. The companies believe that the packaging design and quality of the product can reach consumers in a way that corporate manufacturers can’t match.
