Increases In Library Usage

Friday, January 30th, 2009

Given the current economy, people are using libraries more than ever before. They are looking for any way to save money and are turning to the free resources that libraries provide.

library use increase Increases In Library UsageLibraries offer books, audio music and books, magazines, programs, computer services, the Internet, and even some DVDs all free of charge. It’s no wonder that so many people are using these free resources, rather than paying for the same thing.

Laura Dolce from seacoastonlone.com reported on several libraries in southern Maine that are having increased circulation of their collections. Several interesting numbers were cited in her report:

  • Huge increase in the number of people taking out books, DVDs and audio materials.
  • One library saw circulation from July to December of last year increase 8.5%
  • DVD usage has increased significantly.
  • The number of patrons using libraries regularly has increased also

Not only do libraries need to increase their collections to support this demand, but they may also need to replace their current DVD cases with more durable, long-lasting ones.

But libraries are not exempt from economic hardships. Costs are rising and budgets are tight. Libraries need to watch where they are spending their money. For this reason, it would be a good idea to invest in premium-quality DVD cases and durable audiobook cases for a reasonable cost. More use means that there will be more wear and tear on the cases. Therefore, libraries need cases that will last long, rather than having to replace them frequently.

What is Branding?

Thursday, January 29th, 2009

One of the most valuable assets a business can acquire is a true understanding of the importance of branding. Branding is not only a promise to the consumers, it tells them what to expect and it differentiates one business from the next.

As the market grows for each individual product, consumers are presented with more choices when trying to obtain a product. The product that can trigger the consumer to have an emotional response will be the one that they will choose to purchase.

nike logo What is Branding?

Nike's message appeals to consumers.

Nike is a great example of branding, people know Nike, and they know their logo, catch phrase, and products. Nike has created a cohesive message that appeals to the consumer. Nike understands what branding can do for their company and if other business can understand this secret as well their revenue and client base will go up.

The first step to branding your business is knowing the potential it has to change your company for the better.

Brand can:

  • Help the customers remember you product, name, business
  • Show the customers what your business does, it explains who you are
  • Build loyalty and encourage repeat purchases
  • Convey emotions with in your customers
  • Add value to your product through an increase in customer trust

Once a business understands what branding can do for them they must understand how to incorporate branding into their company, so that it will work for them and attract customers. Remember branding is not marketing; it is creating an image for your brand.

Here are some useful Tips to help you create a brand that will showcase your company:

  • Spend money to create a great logo
  • Integrate your brand into every aspect of your business, for instance letterheads, employee dress, etc.
  • Develop a memorable tagline
  • Create brand standards and design templates to keep the entire brand cohesive
  • Know your target audience and to some extent base your brand on what they want you to be and what they need you to be
  • Write down your brand message, make sure everyone in the company knows what your goals are, and stay true to your brand

The AMA (American marketing Association) defines branding as “name, term, sign, symbol or design or a combination of them intended to identify the goals and services of one seller or group of sellers and to differentiate them from those of other sellers.”

So go ahead, differentiate your company from the rest, and design a branding campaign that will take your business to the next level.

Pantone 2009 Color of the Year

Friday, January 23rd, 2009

How much thought do you put into choosing the color for your product, packaging, and advertisements? Color has a huge impact in customers’ purchasing decisions. Color Matters found research to help prove this point:

  • 92.6 percent say visual factors are most important when purchasing products. (Seoul International Color Expo 2004).
  • 73 percent of purchasing decisions are made in-store. (Henley Centre).
  • People make subconscious judgments within 90 seconds of the first viewing, and 62-90 percent of these are strictly based on color. (CCICOLOR-Institute for Color Research).

Not only does using color significantly impact the perception of a product, but the choice of color also matters. Different colors give of different emotions and moods. It is best to choose colors that will best reach your target market. June Campbell stated which qualities and emotions are associated with certain colors in “Color Psychology of Marketing”:mamosa flower yellow Pantone 2009 Color of the Year

Avoid Blu-Ray Confusion

Thursday, January 22nd, 2009

The new Blu-Ray technology format can be confusing for some. While most know that it is a superior quality format to enhance the entertainment experience, not all may know that a specific player is required for it to work. Blu-Ray discs can only be played on Blu-Ray Disc players, Playstation® 3, or Blu-Ray Disc drives on computers. Blu-Ray discs cannot be played on DVD players. DVDs, however, will play on Blu-Ray Disc players. They just won’t look as nice as the high definition video available with Blu-Ray discs.

blu ray disc in dvd case Avoid Blu Ray ConfusionSince Blu-Ray is different than DVDs and is not compatible with regular DVD players, there needs to be a way to differentiate these discs. Packaging can do that easily.

Many major studios have adopted blue cases for their Blu-Ray discs that are slightly different in size from standard black DVD cases.

Criterion, on the other hand, just released some of their titles on Blu-Ray, but not in the traditional Blu-Ray discs. They use standard black DVD cases with a small Blu-Ray credit on the back and a small blue sticker on the shrink wrap. The engadgetHD blog mentioned the different packaging on their movies. After reading some of the discussion, it seemed like many people were not happy with the standard black DVD cases. They found them confusing. It is harder to recognize on the shelf and some customers may accidentally buy the Blu-Ray version, rather than the standard version. Some did not like that the cases do not match up with their current Blu-Ray collections.blu ray dvd case Avoid Blu Ray Confusion

When customers see the signature blue Blu-Ray cases on the shelves, they know that they are purchasing a high definition movie. This is why it is important for Blu-Ray discs to be differentiated from standard DVDs. Avoid the mix-ups and confusion. Read more about our new Blu-Ray cases that will be available next week!

Prevent Theft and Damage to Library Media Collections

Friday, January 16th, 2009

It can be a great expense for libraries to be able to offer a wide range of CDs and DVDs in their media collections. This is especially true when theft and damage are taken into consideration. Libraries want to be able to provide these resources to the public, but cannot afford to keep replacing the stolenblack premium dvd case Prevent Theft and Damage to Library Media Collections or damaged discs. Can anything be done to prevent these problems? We had a few ideas that could reduce these losses:

First, invest in premium quality CD/DVD cases. These cases are durable, and not only will the cases last longer, but they will also protect your discs. Strong hubs prevent the discs from falling out, and the quick-release button allows for easy removal without breaking the disc. Media collections get an extensive amount of use and that requires packaging that will last.

Premium quality cases can help prevent damage, but how can libraries prevent theft? cd dvd security tape Prevent Theft and Damage to Library Media Collections There needs to be a higher amount of security. A number of different companies offer electromagnetic security tape. If this is placed on more costly items, theft can be reduced. 3M also offers a product called radio frequency identification (RFID) solution. This software verifies that the discs and cases match up when returned to libraries. This will make managing the growing media collections more efficient. Libraries will not have to worry about getting the wrong disc or receiving an empty case.

By investing in premium quality CD/DVD cases and security, damage and theft to libraries’ media collections can be significantly reduced. Then libraries could add more options to their selection, rather than having to replace the old ones.

Creative Uses for Extra CD & DVD Jewel Cases

Tuesday, January 6th, 2009

You may have decided to store your CDs and DVDs in albums for easy organization and to save space. If you’re like me, these jewel cases are still taking over your room, because you do not have the heart to throw them away. But what do you do with them?

We researched online and found several creative ways in which you can reuse these jewel cases, instead of adding more to our landfills. Here are a few of the good ideas that we found:cd case pen holder Creative Uses for Extra CD & DVD Jewel Cases

  1. Turn them into picture frames. This is simple and easy project. You can decorate your own border and insert the picture. You can either make a standing frame, put magnets on the back to put on the fridge, or mount them on the wall.
  2. Make a wall calendar. All you have to do is print the numbers 1-31 on separate sheets and place them in the mounted cases. You could even insert a friend’s picture in the case of his or her birthday.
  3. Make a pen holder. Craft Chi explained how to make a pen holder out of slim jewel cases. The sides can be decorated with pictures or artwork.
  4. Store pressed leaves or flowers. This is a great way to display and protect them from damage.
  5. They make great gifts. You could give a friend one of these crafted ideas, or make them an audio mix CD.
  6. Donate them. Chances are you have more jewel cases than you would like to make picture frames with. Kids love crafts, so you could donate your extra cases to a local school or church organization. Libraries constantly have to buy new cases to loan out their music. You could donate your cases as a way of “giving back” for the services that they provide. Small indie bands may also like to use your old cases to package their CDs.

These are many simple and easy ways to display your memories. Not only do these crafts make great gifts, but it helps relieve your eco-friendly conscience by not having to throw boxfuls of plastic away. So go tackle that mountain of jewel cases and get ready for an afternoon of crafting fun.
